Job perk of being a librarian: loaning a kid a book that has a great twist in it, and waiting and waiting for them to reach it, and then one day they come in and you see in their eyes that they HAVE and then you both gush and giggle and do excited hand gestures for ages šŸ™‚

A huge thank you to @jhalakprize for this incredibly generous donation of secondary school library books, students were so impressed they appointed their favourite library mascot to guard our new collection!

Thank you @bcb567. @guardian @BBCRadio4: Cover this please. Don't the censorship of school libraries be a silent, insidious creep. If parents, teachers, librarians and school governors are not aware of the issue, they can't challenge it. barbara567band.blogspot.com/…

Last week, we published a shocking story about nearly 200 books being removed from a school library in Greater Manchester. Now, the school in question has been named. The question remains: who is accountable? Read our follow-up ā¬‡ļø indexoncensorship.org/2026/0…

I recently found out, thanks to @IndexCensorship , that my book, Queerly Autistic, was caught up in a mass book ban in a Greater Manchester school. I’m furious that the school librarian, who is autistic, was harassed by the school for providing my book to autistic young people.

School librarians are not in the business of harming children. Almost four years on from my own experience with this issue it is infuriating that UK librarians are having to defend the rights of young people to read freely. Our profession is vulnerable & so are our readers.
A shocking new investigation by Index reveals that Emily (not her real name), a school librarian in Greater Manchester, faced disciplinary action after stocking the book Men Who Hate Women. Nearly 200 books were targeted. 1/4

Not quite sure what to say about this - @educationscot (responsible for designing & improving the curriculum) are basically saying we don't need authors or illustrators to write stories. Use AI to do it! What an example to give to children.
Simply describe the storybook you want (e.g. ā€œCreate a storybook for a 5 year old explaining people in our community who help usā€) and Gemini will create a unique 10-page illustrated storybook complete with custom audio narration!šŸ‘‡#NationalStorytellingWeek

Fantastic to see Ā£12.5m from HMG to NLT & schools for library spaces, James Bowen of NAHT & Caroline Roche of CILIP School Libraries Group are right though, to have a larger & lasting impact it must also come with investment in staff tes.com/magazine/news/primar…

School staff shouldn't have to scrabble around or spend their own money to get hold of new books and reading material for children. Dedicated money needs to be set aside by the government, just like it is for the PE and sport premium. It matters far too much to be left to chance.

Everybody has a right to make their own mind up, informed by a range of good information - that's power. It's also a fundamental issue for our profession. Yet is under attack. CILIP members & non-members can join this new #IntellectualFreedom Committee cilip.org.uk/news/713670/Be-…
