I'm not sure how anyone can interpret Maelle/Alicia as anything other than selfish and entirely motivated by her own interests. She's nothing but selfish from start to finish. Even as Maelle she's motivated to leave Lumiere to go out on her own, not to save Lumiere like the other expeditioners. She's the villain of the story.
