"For pre-production, our beloved A R guy, Luke Wood, recommended we try the "band goes into nature to write" move, where a band isolates themselves somewhere remote, far from all distraction, to truly focus and engage with the music. He found us a studio on a farm in Cotati, CA, not quite remote but a solid hour from our homes in the Bay. We are no strangers to hard work and certainly, like all bands who come from our corner of punk and hardcore, we know how to suffer, but the little cabins on the property left a LOT to be desired. I remember a thick layer of cat hair on my bed and one exposed bulb for light. After 12 rehearsing that first day, no one was thrilled to spend the night. Luke was so hyped on the idea of the four of us communing with nature, living, breathing pre-production, no one had the heart to complain. But that night as he bid us good night and drove his car down the dark, rural farm road towards his hotel, I often wonder if he noticed the four sets of headlights behind him as we all absconded home for a night of sleep before rising early to commute back and appear groggy and just-awakened when he drove in ready for the new day.
