Observed annually across the continent, the Day of the African Child honours the courage of children who participated in the 1976 Soweto Uprising in South Africa and reaffirms Africa's commitment to the rights, welfare, and protection of every child. Established by the African Union in 1991, the day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to ensure that all children have access to quality education, protection, and opportunities to thrive. Today, the launch of 2026 Day of the African Child celebrations spearhead by the National Council for Children Services under the State Department for Children Services, with support from partners, was in Marsabit County under the theme: “Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa.” Activities began with courtesy calls to the Office of the County Commissioner, Mr. Stanley Kamande, and the Governor of Marsabit County, represented by the Deputy Governor, H.E. Solomon Gubo Riwe. The delegation then joined children and stakeholders in a colourful procession from Marsabit County Stadium to the venue SKM Comprehensive School. Highlights of the event included a tree-planting exercise, a gallery walk, presentations by children, and remarks from leaders and stakeholders, all focused on advancing the rights and wellbeing of children. Among those in attendance were the Chief Guest, the Deputy Governor of Marsabit County; the Acting Chair of NCCS board Mr. Joseph Iha Wanje; the Secretary for Children Services, Mr. Shem Nyakutu amongst many development partners. The launch set the tone for the national celebrations scheduled for 16th June 2026 in Homa Bay County. @AFOSCKENYA , Today, a patch of bare ground became a promise. With every shovel of soil and every seedling planted, our community chose action over waiting, hope over doubt, and a greener future over neglect. #TreePlanting #ClimateAction #WorldEnvironmentDay #GoGreen #Kenya
