Pool money (and where you can save it to spend elsewhere) is the main driver. Unless a Skenes, Strasburg, or Harper, huge savings going under slot with the 1st pick, then accumulating as much talent over slot later as possible.

Did this drill in the backyard for a week straight when I was 14 years old. The next week, my team had a travel ball tournament in Kansas City. I went 1-16 with 13k’s.
Never hit another basketball.
One of our staples this year was hitting basketballs. Teaching ball compression. How to strike the ball properly. Adding in a load and pause as well. Band on the back arm, so the hands stay in a good launch position.

The contract aligns with your window. Career longevity doesn’t really matter. If he stays healthy and plays to his talent level, you probably don’t resign him at free agency anyways.
