Earlier this month, we had the honor of having @DerronWallace from Brandeis University as the keynote speaker for our annual Shirley Graham and W.E.B. Du Bois Lecture. Dr. Wallaces’ talk highlighted secondary educational institutions in New York City and London, United Kingdom.

In this audio-visual account, I explain the driving force behind my new book, The Culture Trap: Ethnic Expectations and Unequal Schooling for Black Youth (Oxford University Press, 2023). I point out what led me to write this book, what I found after years of research, and why cultural factors and structural forces matter for Black youth in schools and society. I acknowledge and thank my son, Jeremiah, for encouraging me to produce this piece for public audiences.
