Everybody wants to think critically and creatively, but nobody wants build their knowledge base! Reasoning, creativity, etc., involve combining elements of a knowledge base. You can't think with knowledge you don't have. You can't cook with ingredients you don't have.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the most common, persistent, and damaging education myth.

A huge thank you from the team for coming to Churchie for the day. Your impact was and will continue to be significant. We look forward to your keynote at this year's A Matter of Translation @researchED_Aus conference on 5th September.
The Australian tour continues with a day at Churchie school in Brisbane. I spoke to all staff about how learning happens then met with faculty leaders, the pastoral team and observed a session with their professional development teams. Such an impressive school. What really struck me is what's possible when an entire school has a shared understanding, vision and approach to improve learning and instruction. Their Science of Learning program 'A Learner's Toolkit' is a real game-changer: alearnerstoolkit.com.au

The #1 killer of motivation in math learning is not disinterest but overwhelm. Learning math opens the door to things you've dreamt about, but that door is atop a mountainous skill hierarchy so steep and winding it's inaccessible to most students. Of those who attempt to climb, most get lost, hit walls too high to scale, repeatedly try and fail to make further progress, and then turn around and go home. The solution is for some mountain climbing guides to identify the gentlest path up the mountain and build a staircase up that path. That way, all the student has to do is focus on taking each consecutive step.
Maths is now the best part of my day emilesilvis.com/maths-is-now…

Just realized that the text of my second inaugural lecture (at the Institute of Education, 2007)—Assessment for Learning: Why, what and how—is no longer being sold by UCL Press, so the copyright reverts to me, and I can make it open access, so here it is: bit.ly/AfLWWH.
