Van Hecke and Gravenberch saved the Dutch team in possession. They are not well coached in possession and completely rely on player initiatives. No common principles guiding them. Japan better coached in possession but could have been more associative. Highly pragmatic game.

Japan look clearer in terms of creation when they do have the ball but they are keeping less of it. They are relying more on the overlap and cutback rather than playing inside the block due to the 5-4-1 congesting the middle. They are adapting to the situation and conserving. 5/

Japan are congesting every space, anticipating passes, applying pressure on each pass & tracking runs so, so well. They are also prepared to hit them on the counter but the Netherlands are quite pragmatic with their rest defense so it seems like a stalemate. 1/

If Japan can retain more possession, then they will more likely score first because they are stretching the Dutch block much better than their block is being stretched. They realize that shorter distances and proper understanding makes up for their physical disadvantages. 6/

Good idea for Tacticos is to study this Japanese defensive structure. Crazy level of coordination and timing. They know exactly when to be aggressive and when to switch to spatial defending. Best defensive team so far at the tournament, they ain't even physically special just ridiculously smart

Agree here. I also think Van Hecke is the only one trying to use diagonals to progress through Japan's block. Vertical play or even rotations are not gonna do anything to this incredible Japan mid-block. Netherlands must try and unlock diagonal play and more switching.
Think Koeman needs to unlock a bit more dynamism in this side. Gakpo high and wide on the left with no one around supporting as VDV keeps a deeper position. Both 8s are virtually inaccessible. Dumfries/Summerville only ones rotating and injecting some pace here so far.

Japan & Netherlands are both pragmatic teams that are very well drilled. Both teams seem patient with and without the ball and are happy to concede possession as long as they are not being carved through. Japan's block much harder to break, though.

Nagelsmann should (perhaps) consider Kimmich in midfield and a better channel defender as a RB considering their shape. It would help their transition defending and their tempo would be much better regulated by a Kimmich. Their counter-press also needs work in the middle.

Germany lovely on the ball, but clearly lacking in transition defending and are leaving the zone 14 completely empty. History for Curaçao.

Brazil need to complement the profiles of their players. Raphinha is not someone who gives you width. I admire the central approach, but you need to use the right profiles. Raphinha is a runner, an outside the box ball-striker and holds up well. There is potential. 1/

Personally, I would use a Vinicius, Pedro and Raphinha front-line. Vinicius to hold width, Pedro to connect from all directions and Raphinha to attack space in b/w the defense. Endrick should come on for Pedro to boost the energy and keep attacking the box with his flair. 5/

Sorry, just realized Pedro was not called up. Would play Endrick or Cunha instead. Preferably both in different game states.

They are a team of rhythm. If they find the right combinations, they have the potential to do damage in this tournament. Let us not underestimate Ancelotti's ability to manage profiles and his players in big games and tight situations. They can go far.
