ALT Highlights of study: 52 groundwater wells were sampled in western ireland Shiga toxigenic E. coli (STEC) was detecgted in 19.2% of wells and in 40% of wells where E. coli was present. Multiple clinically relevant STEC serogroups were detected in wells with 20 cfu/100 mL E. coli or more Risk factors for well contamination with STEC were increased 30 day mean antecedent rainfall, decreasing well depth and increasing septic tank density
