It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of longtime ASFS member Jeff Sobal. Jeff was a Cornell nutrition department sociologist, an ardent supporter of food studies research, and a kind friend to all. Read his obituary here: lansingfuneralhome.com/obitu…

The @asfs_org / @afhvs_org annual meetings are quite special. Where else can you learn about farmers in the middle, and then have the chance to taste climate change through wine (along with a social network analysis). So thankful for this community! And, I got to see my book!

Was humbled to be in community and conversation with Desiree Lewis, Hanna Garth, @KanjiSuch , and Janaka Lewis @ASFS_org
Listening to a stellar panel on transnational feminist food studies at the ASFS-AFHVS conference at Syracuse University @ASFS_org @afhvs_org “In the work of South African scholar, Desiree Lewis, she rightly points out many of the blind spots of early scholarship in North American feminist food studies that assumes a global north perspective and calls for more transnational feminist food studies (2005). In Eating While Black, Forson expands an intersectional framework while centering race especially for Black women. By bringing transnational feminist food scholars into conversation with intersectional scholars of color in the global north, we can move past some of these overly simplistic analyses of women and food. This roundtable based on a forthcoming volume which seeks to center voices that have been marginalized in food studies, to include positionality as a valuable perspective and to advance discussions about decolonizing food studies both in terms of colonialism but also in terms of location through decentering whiteness and addressing settler colonialism, caste, heteronormativity and gender binaries.”
