The first group of Ridglan Beagles are on grass, in fresh air and doing what they love to do, sniffing and howling around. Only happy days ahead for them.

A convicted cockfighter is running for the Oklahoma Legislature. Anthony DeVore, founder of the Oklahoma Gamefowl Commission and currently on probation following a cockfighting conviction, is seeking election to House District 19. Animal Wellness Action says voters should reject candidates who support weakening Oklahoma's anti-cockfighting laws, noting that cockfighting is tied to illegal gambling, organized crime, and animal cruelty. With primary elections approaching, the debate over animal fighting has become a major political issue in Oklahoma.

The USDA just hit pause on horse exports to Mexico because of the growing threat posed by New World screwworm. For years, advocates have argued that shipping American horses across borders for slaughter is cruel, unnecessary, and risky. Now, a major biosecurity threat is reinforcing that case. The temporary suspension protects agriculture today. The next step should be a permanent ban on exporting American horses for slaughter. Congress has the opportunity to finish the job.

Congress just took a meaningful step in the fight against animal fighting. The House approved bipartisan legislation providing $2 million for federal investigations into dogfighting, cockfighting, animal trafficking, and related criminal activity. Strong laws matter—but so does enforcement. This funding will help investigators target the organized networks that profit from animal cruelty, illegal gambling, and violence. Now it's time to finish the job and pass the FIGHT Act.

According to a report by the Cowboy State Daily, a suspect has come forward and admitted to shooting Django and Hera, the two Rottweilers found dead in the North Platte River near Torrington. The Goshen County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that a suspect has been identified, though no charges have yet been announced. Just days ago, we offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. The investigation remains ongoing, but the family may finally be one step closer to answers—and accountability.

Another 135 beagles are leaving Ridglan Farms this week. That brings the total number of dogs removed from the Wisconsin laboratory breeding facility to 1,635 beagles—one of the largest efforts ever undertaken to move dogs out of the research supply system and into homes. At the same time, momentum is building in Congress to end taxpayer-funded dog experiments and accelerate the transition to modern, human-relevant research methods. For these dogs, it's the beginning of a new life. For science, it's a sign that a new era is taking shape.

We have appealed New Jersey's denial of a petition to phase out lead-based hunting ammunition, arguing that safer non-toxic alternatives are widely available and already used by millions of hunters. Continuing to allow lead ammunition puts bald eagles, hawks, vultures, other wildlife, and even consumers of wild game at unnecessary risk.

Prominent jockeys José Ortiz and Irad Ortiz Jr. are facing growing scrutiny after photos and videos surfaced allegedly linking them to illegal cockfighting activity in Puerto Rico. Animal welfare advocates are calling on racing authorities to investigate and adopt stronger policies barring licensed racing professionals from participating in organized animal fighting ventures. Cockfighting is illegal under federal law and tied to illegal gambling, organized crime, and extreme animal cruelty.

A major horse slaughter plant in Alberta has shut down—marking another major decline in the North American horse slaughter industry. The closure of Bouvry Exports leaves just one remaining horse slaughter plant in Canada and none in the United States. Advocates say the shrinking industry reflects collapsing demand for horse meat and growing public rejection of shipping American horses abroad for slaughter. Now attention turns to Congress, where lawmakers are being urged to pass the SAFE Act and permanently ban the export of U.S. horses to Mexico and Canada for slaughter.

1,500 beagles are finally free. We led the effort to secure their release from Ridglan Farms. After lives spent in cages, they are feeling grass for the first time. But here’s the truth: thousands more dogs are still in labs right now. We’re working to end this—permanently. 👉 Help us finish the fight: bit.ly/CHEBeagle

This is why we fight. The Ridglan Rescue matters. But reform is how we stop the suffering at scale. We’re pushing federal agencies to phase out animal testing entirely. bit.ly/CHEBeagle
