As I wrote in December 2012 (!): “Atlantic Yards ‑ for now, an arena, with one tower slated to start construction on Dec. 18 ‑ should serve as a reminder that, as such complicated deals evolve, the public interest requires constant vigilance.” web.archive.org/web/20121219… Still true.

Would Joe Tsai's Slickest Move Be Poaching Ticketmaster Plaza? normanoder.substack.com/p/wo… Keeping the branded plaza bolsters #BarclaysCenter operations & revenues. @empirestatedev has more leverage than they admit. Why not map it as parkland & charge BSE Global a licensing fee? 1/

A little on the backstory behind my @CityLimitsNews article on Atlantic Avenue spot rezonings normanoder.substack.com/p/fr… a few thoughts on hyperlocal journalism

In 2022, the City Council approved two Atlantic Avenue projects after the developers committed to a "record-setting" 35% affordable housing—a deal the local councilmember said showed that "developers can and must offer more" than what's usually required 🧵 citylimits.org/how-a-35-affo…

But after a rise in interest rates and closed-door negotiations, the buildings opened with only 25% affordability, plus a gift of nearby property that might—assuming govt. agencies offer future funding—make up for part of the shortfall, @AYReport found. citylimits.org/how-a-35-affo…

The Knicks win & NYC exults, mostly. The Nets may be irrelevant now, but how handle a win in BK? normanoder.substack.com/p/th… Some chaos in Manhattan reminds us how Barclays is a VERY tight fit Also, City & State's Sports package raises some ?s but ignores a key one (as does Mamdani)

Replying to @conorsen
But no. Same thing happens in many cities in the European soccer leagues and they get no subsidies. Don’t believe the hype.

This is a good point. Knicks are a unique situation where despite having very little homegrown talent, the benefits of a homegrown build were still there as the Knicks’ culture and foundation was largely built at Villanova. That plus the familial relationship between Leon Rose & Jalen Brunson, Rick Brunson on staff etc. brought a dynamic that is foreign to typical non-homegrown builds.
See how Nets fans miss the point. Nix were made in Villanova. Their continuity was built thru 4 years of college and 2 national championships Nix didn’t even sign all stars. They signed friends who won together, continuity is the key. you can’t replicate what they did.

Everything I'm seeing, especially in Brooklyn, should rock the @brooklynnets organization to its core. Any championship celebration in the borough moving forward won't match what's going on in Kings County right now. And they had 15 years to make an impact. #NetsWorld

Agreed. I'd add that it's safer to assume AMI will continue to rise at rates comparable or greater than those of the past ten years, and require the lowest average income target available in a state-sponsored program.

The second half scene in front of BAM in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Most people here could be watching comfortably at home, with a good view of their TV’s. They rather be side by side with their fellow New Yorkers, cramped, hot, and experiencing this together. Go NY, go NY, go!

As #affordablehousing baseline continues to rise, what might "low-income" mean if Atlantic Yards buildings open in 2031? normanoder.substack.com/p/as… A couple, at 60% AMI, might have to earn nearly $110K and pay $2,565 /month for a 1-bedroom. So, deeper affordability is needed.

Well, the Barclays Center opened with severe flaws, since bass from concerts leaked into the surrounding neighborhood, prompting an emergency retrofit, with the new green roof atlanticyardsreport.blogspot…

At Barclays Center, the court is 34 feet below street level. Sinking the main arena floor below street level naturally suppresses sound leakage, which helps keep the venue quieter for surrounding neighborhood.

This is Fancy Free, on Lafayette Avenue and also pretty close to the Barclays Center. I was around there and other bars for Game 3 x.com/AYReport/status/206415…

The scene outside Spike Lee’s favorite sports bar, up the block from his production company in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, celebrating the Knicks epic come from behind win.

Let's be real: if ever the Brooklyn Nets make the NBA Finals and prompt chaos in the streets near the Barclays Center, which edges into a residential neighborhood, the margin for error (and bad fan behavior) is much, much lower x.com/dean_moses/status/2064… x.com/legionhoops/status/206…

Knicks fans seen throwing things at Wemby as he was leaving the team bus. This is getting crazy. (via @KingCharge)

Not just MSG, making even larger profits this post-season, but also the other major league sports venues in NYC, which benefit from tax exemptions and tax-free financing normanoder.substack.com/p/so…

Reminder that MSG and billionaire Dolan should be paying the city and state way more in taxes.

After the Knicks are spun off from the rest of MSG in next couple of months, he’ll sell a piece to a Middle Eastern sovereign wealth fund. Watch.
we're on pace for the first ever "sell the team" chants at a championship parade

RB, a "lukewarm Nets fan," writes: "The Nets do not matter, especially now. The Knicks have guaranteed the Nets will be little more than a minor league franchise in NYC for another generation." I'm no Nets (or Knicks) fan, but IMO it depends on roster construction could change
My essay on the Knicks, Kalshi, and influencer culture is now out from behind the paywall. Go and enjoy this one. rosselliotbarkan.com/p/the-n…

These official watch parties have become a political mess. New York needs real public spaces where tens of thousands of people can freely assemble, whether for watching sports or protests, much like the squares and plazas you find in many European and South American cities.
