The combined threats of climate change and rapid loss of biodiversity have a solution – increased global protection of land and sea. Thank you, Mr President, for standing up and making this call. We are proud of you, your government, and our country.

Your support today will help pave the way for a more sustainable future for us all. The global 30x30 target will be a powerful tool in ensuring that we protect the minimum percentage of land and sea required to ensure that we have a chance of survival into the future.
Why should you care? Why should you show your support? We each have a part to play in the protection of our planet and people…As youth, we ultimately stand to inherit the planet of tomorrow.
A chance to share your voice with Minister Barbara Creecy… You can add your name in support of the letters to the Minister here: forms.gle/461XjHRUzFR2FL4DA

The youth of our country have always been a leading voice, a powerful catalyst for change and today we ask you to again come together to help ensure we secure a sustainable future for our people and planet.
Following the outcomes of the negotiations, the Maziwe 30x30 campaign hopes to gain further support from our country’s youth as we continue our efforts to communicate with and engage with our government.
Leading up to and following the Convention of Biological Diversity Negotiations in Geneva, youth from the Maziwe 30x30 campaign submitted two letters to Minister Creecy with the aim of highlighting the importance of the global 30x30 target to the youth of South Africa.

While South Africa acknowledged the importance of the 30x30 target at the CBD negotiations – our leaders remain uncommitted to supporting it on the global stage.

While we understand that the developing world is restricted by resource availability for conservation, we do not believe that it should be used as an excuse to prevent supporting the global initiative!

Quite the opposite, committing to the 30x30 target will open more resources to support the protection of our planet for our people.
As youth of the rainbow nation, we have always been a driver for the inclusion and involvement of local communities in the space of protected areas, be it land or sea.

Over centuries, local communities have developed a wealth of knowledge linked to nature – this knowledge together with their support will undoubtedly prove to be a powerful tool in achieving the 30x30 target.

By working with communities, exchanging knowledge, and providing the correct resources, we are building a stronger and more sustainable future for our planet and people Maziwe 30x30 – It must happen for our future!
