The newest episode of IMBIF is out!
In this episode, @DrFrancisYoung returns to the show to discuss his newest book, Fairies: A History.
Dr. Young traces fairies and fairy encounters from pagan Europe all the way to the 21st Century. He argues that it is not useful to think of fairies as beings that can be proved and documented scientifically, but experienced through a type of perception.
Have we moderns lost this type of perception?

Friends, we have had a request for prayer through Fr Willie’s intercession, a miracle is needed for a man who is dying. If you have a moment, please offer this prayer for a complete cure of BM. Only invoke Fr Willie please. Let’s leave room for a miracle. Thanks.

Just ordered Fairies A History by ‘UK-based historian and folklorist’ Francis Young, who ‘specialises in the history of religion and belief’… looks like something Tolkien fans would want to read.
In your charity, kindly offer a prayer for my dear 91-year-old mother, Marian, who is in emergency surgery after a fall in which her hip was broken. With metastatic cancer and dementia, this is a real trial for her, and us. Thank you.
Yes this is something that is distinctly modern
People want the faeries to come back but those most enthusiastic believe they are benevolent beings, instead of the terrifying creatures of actual folklore
This is a tension I detect in a lot of folklore enthusiasts - on the one hand, a performed desire for it all to be real; but on the other hand, an absence of any of the awe, fear or wariness you would expect from someone who *really* believed the enchantment was real
