Jensen was recently asked what company he would start today, and his answer was shocking. Lesson: "The superpower of an entrepreneur [is] they don't know how hard it is, and they only ask themselves, 'How hard can it be?'" (9/15)

The third and final lesson of Jensen’s commencement speech: Follow your vision and retreat when you go off course. Deciding what to give up is at the very core of success. To be strategic, you must learn to select the very few products or features that can fulfill the company’s vision and retreat from all other projects. (14/15)

So, Jensen called SEGA's CEO and explained that they couldn’t continue to build inferior technology, but if they were not paid, Nvidia would go bankrupt. To his shock, SEGA paid, and when Nvidia launched a new chip, they were only 30 days from going out of business. Lesson: Be humble, ask for help, and always work like you’re 30 days from going out of business. (7/15)

Triangles nearly destroyed Nvidia. It was painful; they had to lay off more than 50% of their workforce and almost failed. Yet this is what Nvidia’s Silicon Valley headquarters looks like. Notice anything? 🤔 (8/15)

Nvidia was in a pickle. Microsoft had announced that they would only support triangle (3 points) based rendering, making Nvidia’s quadrilateral (4 points) based chips obsolete. If Nvidia continued building the SEGA Dreamcast, their chip business would go bankrupt, but if they didn’t build it, they would also go bankrupt. (6/15)

Microsoft had discontinued support for quadrilateral (4 points) graphics in preference of triangles (3 points). This was a death sentence for Nvidia’s technology. Their new NV1 chip and next-generation NV2 chip (still in development) would’ve become obsolete. Rest in peace, NV2. (4/15)

Triangular graphics became the standard because they could easily be rendered into 3D shapes. Quadrilateral shapes, with 4 points, had the potential to produce better graphics, but they were slower to render. Lesson: Faster is often better than better. (5/15)

This is Jensen Huang, who was a dishwasher at Denny’s and considered himself successful until he started Nvidia. He always starts his story with humble beginnings and hard work rather than mentioning that he was also a brilliant engineer and Stanford graduate. (2/15)

At @Twitch, @petergyang learned the best way to handle disagreements. It's also a trait of the product manager who everyone wants to work with. Here's the most popular highlight (via Kindle) in Principles of Product Management by Peter Yang: "When you get into disagreements with others, remember that your job as a product manager is to find the truth, not to be right all the time." Peter Yang is a Top Voice in Product, who you should follow for more great insights.

What's the difference between a hobbyist, a tinkerer, and an entrepreneur? It's part of the most popular quote from How I Built This, the book by @guyraz based on the lessons from his podcast, @HowIBuiltThis. "There is a name for a person who creates something purely out of passion: hobbyist. There is a name for a person who creates something out of passion that solves a problem only they have: tinkerer. There is a name for a person who creates something out of passion that also solves a problem they share with lots of other people: entrepreneur." I love this quote and how Guy's interview with Lisa Price, founder of @carolsdaughter, illustrates it perfectly. #productdevelopment #startups #entrepreneurs
