Who's got a screenwriting or storytelling query for me?
I'm inbetween script reads at the moment, so opening my DMs to serious screenwriters who want to ask me, a script guy with nearly 30 years of industry experience, a sensible question. As always...
The creative industry will try to convince you that constant visibility equals relevance. But quality work will always find its way when you let go of needing to be liked and trust that your unique perspective is already valuable.
I know what's wrong with your script without even reading it. You're trying to write something that "works".
Instead of asking, does this work, ask:
Is this innovative?
Will actors kill for the role?
Is it culturally valuable?
Is this uniquely me?
AI has derivative covered :)
I've been freelance for 10 years now. I'd highly recommend it to people who enjoy working as hard as they possibly can, whilst simultaneously feeling unemployed
Some people love to punch down on emerging screenwriters, but honestly I think if you're having a great time doing this, you're already winning. Not all art needs to be an all or nothing capitalist venture. A lot of us are here for the journey itself.
Taking on two more writers this year for my one-to-one writing courses. There’s some information below or my DMs are open, come and say hello!
