ALT A prayer for the World Cup
God of glory,
as the world gathers
to celebrate the beautiful game,
we pray for a harmonious and joyous World Cup.
Bring safety and security
for players and officials on the pitch,
fans in the stands, and spectators at home.
May we see and celebrate the hand of God
in the creativity of every curving free kick,
silky pass or impossible save.
May we have compassion and perspective
on the miskicks, missed penalties,
and muddled VARs.
Every winning team needs a losing team
– even if you were the better team.
Let the journey to World Cup glory
be not only for the nation that wins.
May we see something more
of the world you want us to be:
a gathering of every nation
and people who share your glory.
Amen.
Apparently, if a church enjoys their vicar's sermon, it might have been written by AI, which is one clear piece of evidence that my sermons aren't written by AI
This week on Murder at the Manse, I’ve been sampling the work of Peter Swanson. Publishers Weekly promised: “Classic whodunit fans will be in heaven.” Were they right? Find out here:

Stanley Hauerwas’ quote that “In 100 years, if Christians are people identified as those who do not kill their children or their elderly, we would have been doing something right” continues to be vindicated.
I have, for my sins, started a substack. My rationale is below, but do have a look if early Christianity, the contemporary relevance of church history, and wider thoughts on church life interest you in any way.

18 years ago today, I was baptised in the River Wear. Each year since, I've learned more and more about how amazing Jesus is.
"Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home."
I don't understand why people complain about the £200 open window fine (£75 if paid in 28 days)
We had to introduce the law because pigeons kept flying into houses and people were feeding them and the pigeons were becoming too powerful. Do we really want to be run by pigeons?
Opened my window in the UK and police came round and installed this.
Was told its illegal to open windows and got a £200 fine. This country is a joke
Community note
There is no UK law making it illegal to open a window, and police do not issue fines for doing so. The image shows a standard window restrictor cable, which is a common safety device installed by homeowners or landlords to prevent falls and improve security. legislation.gov.ukhse.gov.ukgov.uk/private-rentin…
I've recently finished a chronological readthrough of John Dickson Carr's 23 Dr Gideon Fell novels. So, this week on Murder at the Manse, here is my official ranking of them all:

It’s is a really dark day when a talk about the history of ancient Israel and Judah is cancelled by the British Museum because of ‘security concerns’.
Is this what we do now? We cave in?
