📅 29th May is Addison’s Disease Day
In late March I was diagnosed with primary adrenal insufficiency (aka Addison's). Since then I've been learning to live with this condition. Fortunately, so far so good, as my medication is working well and I feel much better than previously.

ALT Purple graphic featuring a quote about the Adrenal Insufficiency Action Plan leaflet.
Inside a large rounded white speech bubble, text reads: “I used the Adrenal Insufficiency Action Plan leaflet yesterday when I had an adrenal crisis (my first for 17 years). SECAmb (South East Coast Ambulance Service) followed every step exactly, my husband had administered the injection and the paramedics handed the Action Plan to the A&E doctor who followed every step precisely. Some of the staff asked to look at it for info as it was the first time they had seen it. Due to this I received excellent care and was able to return home in the afternoon. Thank you ☺️”
Decorative purple quotation marks appear in the top left and bottom right corners of the speech bubble.
At the bottom left are two small images of the “Adrenal Insufficiency Action Plan” leaflet.
The Addison’s Disease Self-Help Group white logo is centred near the bottom, with a white curved arrow pointing toward the lower right corner.
ALT Purple graphic titled “WHAT IS THE ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY ACTION PLAN?” in large white capital letters at the top centre. Small traffic light illustrations appear on the left and right sides of the heading.
Below, white text explains: “This leaflet uses a traffic light system to explain to others how to manage your condition.”
The graphic is divided into three colour-coded sections. Above each section is a small image of a page from the Adrenal Insufficiency Action Plan, and underneath is a coloured label with explanatory text.
The first section has a teal “GREEN” label and states: “Explains your daily medication & its time-critical nature.”
The second section has an amber “AMBER” label and states: “Explains your Sick Day Rules & recommended doses in 24hr period.”
The third section has a red “RED” label and states: “Signs of adrenal crisis & emergency actions, treatment & monitoring.”
The Addison’s Disease Self-Help Group logo appears in white at the bottom left corner.
ALT A graphic shows a teal-and-white “Adrenal Insufficiency Action Plan” leaflet from the Addison's Disease Self-Help Group and The Pituitary Foundation. It has been placed on the side of a white fridge using a red magnet.
The leaflet includes spaces for personal details such as name, date of birth, NHS number, and date completed.
Attached diagonally across the middle-right section of the leaflet is a bright red rectangular magnet from the Addison's Disease Self-Help Group. The magnet reads: “Risk of Adrenal Crisis – Steroid Dependent – Life-threatening condition.” There is a medical alert star symbol in the top-right corner of the magnet.
Purple text in the upper-right corner of the image says, “Keep it handy and share with others!” with a hand-drawn purple arrow pointing toward the leaflet.
In the lower-right corner, inside a white curved shape, more purple text reads, “Give a copy to your GP, family & friends, colleagues or anyone you spend time with,” with a lightbulb icon above.
ALT Purple graphic encouraging people to download or order an Adrenal Insufficiency Action Plan leaflet. Large white text at the top reads: “DOWNLOAD FOR FREE OR ORDER FROM OUR SHOP”.
Below is a white banner displaying a website address in purple handwritten-style text: “www.addisonsdisease.org.uk/adrenal-insufficiency-action-plan-3-month-prescription-letter”.
In the centre is a large angled image of the Adrenal Insufficiency Action Plan leaflet, opened to show three sections.
The leaflet uses a traffic light system: green for daily medication guidance, amber for Sick Day Rules, and red for adrenal crisis emergency information.
Headings visible on the leaflet include “My Daily Medication,” “My Sick Day Rules,” and “In an Adrenal Crisis.”
To the left of the leaflet image, bold white text reads:
“Be aware.
Be prepared.
Be understood.”
The Addison’s Disease Self-Help Group logo appears in white in the bottom left corner.
For people living with Addison's, salt is a hot topic in this weather☀️But why do people with Addison’s often crave salty foods at diagnosis? & why does salt remain a trusted “pick me up” afterwards?
