Congratulations to Steve Borley for being awarded an OBE for services to the Welsh economy across engineering, construction and sports participation. This is so well deserved. Whilst @Adrian1Robson was Lord Mayor, we got to know the brilliant team at @CMBEngineering and learnt about the amazing work Steve and his Christine do for the local community in Llanrumney, Cardiff and beyond. Their kindness and dedication over the decades has made a profound and long lasting impact on #Cardiff.

Today was one of the two most difficult days of my life. Laying my mother to rest was so hard, as I try and adjust to life without my parents. I would like to thank The Revd Canon Stewart Lisk for leading the service at the beautiful St Margaret's Church in Roath. His kindness, compassion and caring nature is incredible. Also to @Adrian1Robson who gave the eulogy - I know how hard it was for him but he did mum proud. And to Millie Davies for singing some of mum's favourite songs from the shows. Millie used to perform concerts for mum during the covid years over zoom. She loved the songs and Millie's singing always put a smile on her face. I am totally indebted to Rhydian for his kindness throughout my mother's latter years. His care for her showed no bounds, and I know that today was impossibly hard for him. To everyone who has sent messages, flowers and gifts - thank you so much. It was mum's dog Boris' birthday today - we decided to postpone that for a day, but the steak is at the ready for his dinner tomorrow night, with some presents. Boris, Maggie and Max are so loving, and offer so much support. They adored mum and loved sitting on her lap. Mum is now with Dave the Dog again - reunited. I don't really know what else to say except that the days, weeks, months and years ahead are going to be impossibly hard. But I am going to throw myself back into work and will start to plan the next fundraising event for the wonderful Rescue Hotel for Dogs and The Forget Me Not Chorus. This is the only way for me.

Tomorrow is my mum's funeral and I have been reflecting on what an amazing human being she was. I remember mum saying she wanted to dress a float about 40 years ago, supporting the @alzheimerssoc @AlzheimersCymru. Mum worked day and night to ensure the float was perfect and we made countless yellow flowers with the other small group of volunteers. I remember the judges talking to us about why we had chosen this theme. It was to support people living with Alzheimers Disease. Little did we know that both my mum, dad and mother in law would pass away from this horrendous illness. My mother lived her life caring for others, particularly children with additional needs, @SJACymru and any charity who approached her to help. She leaves a huge legacy and I know that she will be looking down now ensuring that I carry on where she left off. I will do my best, but it won't be easy with such a huge void. Both my parents have gone and nothing prepares you for this.

Tonight I finished my year in office as the Rt Hon The Lord Mayor of Cardiff 2025-2026. It has been a true honour and one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Here is my outgoing speech tonight, following the installation of Cllr Michael Michael as the new Lord Mayor - and I wish him every success. Jayne and I look forward to continuing to support the two charities, Forget-me-not Chorus and the Rescue Hotel.

Today is my last day as the Lord Mayor of #Cardiff. With passing of both my mother and mother-in-law in recent weeks, it has been a difficult month and I'd like to thank everyone for their kind comments. One event that did proceed was yesterday's opening of the new Memorial Garden at Thornhill Crematorium for people and their pets. It is important that there is a place where people can remember both at the same time, and soon they will be able to scatter ashes of loved people and pets in the nearby scatter garden. I must also highlight @JayneCowan's work on this as the leading force on this project, but many people have also given up their time or made donations to make this possible.

My mum sadly passed away peacefully today on her 87th Birthday. We were with her. Mum was an incredible, determined and friendly lady. My parents gave me a wonderful start in life, and provided with me so many opportunities. I am forever grateful to them both. I need to mention Rhydian who was my mum's live in carer, and a best friend to both Adrian and I. He moved in to support mum during covid and never left. The four of us lived together happily with the dogs. His care, compassion, understanding and patience is something I have never seen before in an individual. I remain indebted to him forever. This is a photograph Rhydian took of my mum.

A number of people have been asking about my mum. Sadly she had 3 seizures on Thursday afternoon/evening and is currently in hospital. These are often caused by the symptoms of advancing dementia, and are very worrying to witness. She is very, very unwell, but is receiving good care. The team are trying everything to get her back to a new baseline. The next 24/48 hours are critical for her. I am staying in the hospital with mum, so please keep in touch with enquiries as I have my laptop with me. Dementia is such cruel and devastating illness for the person and their family and friends. Please learn more about the illness and how to spot the signs early on so a plan can be formulated to give the person the very best life living with dementia.

A real treat yesterday for @JayneCowan and me as we received an invitation to the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. It was a wonderful occasion with fantastic sandwiches and cakes and great opportunity to mingle and chat with other guests from across the UK. It was great to see Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla, who spent well over an hour talking to some of the guests as they made their way from the Palace to the tea tent. And as can be seen in the video clip, the grounds at the Palace were superb!

A massive thank you to Dan Robson who completed the Ten y Fan challenge this weekend in aid of my two nominated charities. I caught up with Dan the day after he completed the 10 climbs, but he didn't look any worse for it! Dan's fundraiser is still open to add to his total - lordmayorofcardiff.co.uk/dan… Thanks again Dan! [@JayneCowan]

An #Aprilthrowback to the incredible Codi Llais concert at #Cardiff's Utilita arena, which had 1600 pupils from #Cardiff and Vale schools come together to form a massive choir. It was a wonderful, energetic concert and included performances from Mike Doyle, Shelleyann, plus Bronwen Lewis who had co-written the song Codi Llais for this special evening. I was pleased to attend alongside mayors/deputies from the Vale, including Penarth, Barry and Dinas Powys. Congratulations to all involved in organising the concert; it was so memorable for every child in the super-choir as well as their family members who attended.

I was pleased to attend the Royal Gun Salute this week at @cardiff_castle marking third anniversary of King Charles III and Queen Camilla's Coronation Day. It was an excellent salute and on this occasion music was provided by The Regimental Band & Corps of Drums of The Royal Welsh.
