We've actually published quite a bit on this and related themes at Three Essays Collective! 🧵
Practices of the State by Tanweer Fazal would be my number one pick:
Literally no one talks about and I found little academic research on the inherent majoritarian impulse of Indian constitution. It Literally "trusts" executive to do what is good. Like there is no real check and balance.
The revival of the Left and survival of democracy are now two sides of the same coin: I write on the unfolding political scene in India for the National Herald.
Remember when the gov said that ‘fake trans folks’ were stealing the welfare schemes meant for ‘real trans folks’?
I filed RTIs about these welfare schemes.
SMILE scheme mandates gov to give scholarships to trans kids.
ZERO have been given out in the past 5 years.
🧵
I also asked for how many applications were received, and how many got accepted.
Well….
“As the component was not operationalised, no applications were processed… no data is available on record”
NOT ONE scholarship given to a trans kids.
How can fake trans people steal non-existent schemes? Why does the gov make an issue of ‘fake trans’ then?
The state creates ‘trans panic’ to further restrict and police gender.
Just realised that the apartment complex I lived in as a child was named THE LAW SAYER that is much too cool, I always thought it was a cute north indian hindi word that I was too telugu to understand
I think this would be a good addition to your Sunday :)
