AGN BRIEFS MINISTERS AS FIRST WEEK OF NEGOTIATIONS CLOSES #COP30 As the first week of COP30 climate negotiations closed, the African Group of Negotiators convened a Ministerial briefing to highlight state of negotiations and reinforcing Africa’s priorities and common position at COP30. AGN Chair, Richard Muyungi reiterated negotiators’ desire to get the best deal for Africa, particularly on adaptation as indicators of the Global Goal on Adaptation are set to be adopted. “Our priorities here at COP30 are clear; finance for overall climate action but most importantly, adaptation as the continent continues to bleed financially to cope with escalating devastating impacts of climate change. On the GGA indicators, we have maintained our position that we need fit for purpose indicators with inclusion of means of implementation as we cannot achieve much without means of implementation support,” said Dr. Muyungi. He emphasised the importance of African unity as the negotiations enter the second and final crucial week, noting that technical negotiators would be available to support high level Ministerial engagements in the various agenda items, especially the yet to be concluded such as the GGA, among others, for which the COP30 Presidency has constituted Ministerial Consultation teams @_AfricanUnion @AfricaAAI @UNEP_Africa @AfDB_Group @AfricanClimate @Amref_Worldwide @Cop30noBrasil @UNFCCC

Dr. Mithika Mwenda, Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) Executive Director: "…Africa’s adaptation and resilience building must remain at the heart of our conversations, both in Africa and globally. Our countries and communities are on the frontlines of climate impacts—yet we have contributed the least to the crisis. Belem must deliver stronger commitments that prioritize the urgent needs of vulnerable communities, protecting livelihoods, ecosystems, and economies. Central to this is adaptation finance. It is not enough to promise – finance must flow, and it must be accessible, predictable, adequate and scaled up dramatically. We must demand concrete delivery on the new collective quantified goal on finance. Africa must lead the call for a goal that is not only ambitious but based on real needs, reflecting the scale of the adaptation and mitigation challenges we face.” @oumi_kay @AfricaAAI @FRLossandDamage @ECA_OFFICIAL @AfricanClimate @AfDB_Group @_AfricanUnion @LDCChairUNFCCC @UNFCCC @UNEP @RoseMwebaza @Amref_Worldwide @DestaLakew @friphiri @Afsafrica @PACJA1 @RichardMuyungi @UNDPClimate @WBG_Climate

AGN KICKS-OFF COMMEMORATIONS FOR ITS 30 YEARS' EXISTENCE WITH A TREE PLANTING EXERCISE IN ZANZIBAR In commemoration of 30 years’ existence of the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change (AGN), Chair of the group, Dr. Richard Muyungi has led the team to a symbolic tree planting exercise in Zanzibar at the on-going AGN Strategic Meeting. The team has planted 30 trees at Hotel Verde, and the hotel has agreed to nurture and preserve the trees for posterity. The AGN is a technical body of the three-tier African negotiating structure that engages in the technical negotiations during the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) and the intersessional negotiations on Climate Change. It was established in 1995 with the objective of representing the interests of Africa in the international climate change negotiations, with a common and unified voice. "We are planting these trees as a symbolic gesture for the 30 years' existence of the AGN. I wish to emphasise that the time we are meeting is when climate change impacts are no longer distant projections, they are our reality today.
