These traditional wells in east Kenya were dug by local communities to provide water sources for their villages. However, due to lack of funds and equipment, there was no way to finish them properly. Now they pose very real dangers to the communities who use them.

With support from IAEA, experts have analysed over 20,000 water samples using nuclear techniques to better understand groundwater and prevent pollution.
The results are already shaping national water management plans, strengthening access to clean water and supporting long-term sustainability across the continent.
