Today we release our State of Ageing 2025 infographics. These 40 free infographics are arranged in the same themes as our State of Ageing report: financial security, demographic changes and trends of our ageing population, older people's experience in work, ageing and health, the quality of England's homes and older people's contributions to society. We welcome other organisations, researchers, and individuals using these infographics on social media or in workshops as a collaborative and interactive way of exploring the report rapidly. How can we create communities that are both carer friendly and age-friendly? This week is #CarersWeek, an annual opportunity to highlight the challenges faced by carers and the contributions that they make, writes our Head of Communities, Charlotte Lewis. "This year’s theme is Building Carer Friendly Communities - showcasing the difference communities can make when they recognise carers, understand their needs and take practical action to support them. When I heard about this year’s theme in the lead up to Carers Week, my ears immediately pricked up. As someone who spends their working life trying to create more age-friendly communities across the country, this theme caused me to reflect on how age-friendly communities could become carer friendly, and vice versa." Says Charlotte. Read more in our latest blog: ageing-better.org.uk/blogs/c… #OlderCarers #Carers #AgeFriendlyUK #Ageing

Yesterday, on #AgeWithoutLimitsDay, we hosted an event in Portcullis House in collaboration with @ersa_news to highlight the need to strengthen employment support for people in their 50s and 60s. With around one million people in this age group wanting to work but locked out of the labour market, the event was an opportunity to bring this issue directly to Parliament and spark conversations about what needs to change. We were pleased to be joined by colleagues from Triage and from the Southampton City Council's Adults Employment Hub, who shared insights from their work on the ground. We were also delighted that the Minister for Employment, Dame @DianaJohnsonMP, was able to drop in and engage with the event. It was particularly encouraging to see strong interest from MPs, with many taking the time to discuss what works in practice and what this means for their local constituencies. Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the discussion! As our @agewithoutlimit campaign celebrates its third Age Without Limits Day, our new polling reveals the continued widespread use of ageist phrases. While some may argue they are just harmless fun, we know they help to underpin and entrench ageism within society which is why it would be better for all if they were no longer used. "Negative assumptions about ageing are so commonplace that we’ve all probably heard comments describing older people as a bit of a dinosaur or over the hill. When you actually stop and think about those phrases, they’re loaded with negativity. Who would want to be considered as past their sell-by date and compared to a rotten and inedible piece of food?" Says our Co-lead for the Age Without Limits campaign. Harriet Bailiss. We welcome DBT’s newly launched consultation on strengthening support for carers, including the introduction of paid leave. Our research shows that caring responsibilities often intensify with age, particularly for women, leaving many balancing ‘sandwich caring’ between dependent children and older parents. Around 200,000 people aged 50 to State Pension age are currently out of work due to caring responsibilities. Strengthening workplace support for carers could play a vital role in closing the employment gap for older workers and reducing financial insecurity in later life. If you want to find out more about carers, read our State of Ageing 2025-26 Society chapter here: ageing-better.org.uk/society… #Carers #CarersWeek #OlderCarers
Millions could re-enter the workforce if better workplace protections for unpaid carers were implemented. That’s why we’re consulting on possible changes to pay and leave entitlements. Have your say: ow.ly/SRRY50Z9fRw

With more than one in three people in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole already aged 50 and over, planning for an age‑friendly future is essential. Our latest case study explores how @BCPCouncil is doing just this by building a strong network of partners who share resources, expertise and lived experience. By working together and listening to voices from diverse communities, BCP is creating local environments where people can live and age well. Today the government released their young people and work report. This report is an independent review of the increase in the number of young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET). “Alan Milburn is right to highlight a crisis in youth employment and the need for systemic reform. “However, the government is being myopic in thinking that focusing all its efforts in solving the youth inactivity crisis will fix the labour market and the economy alone. “There is an equally alarming crisis in the 50 labour market where almost one million older workers would like to work but currently are not. “How the UK lags behind other countries, the need for greater flexibility and health support from employers, spending more resource on employment support in order to reduce benefit spending - much of what the report says about the issues in the youth labour market applies equally to older workers. “Without focussing equal resource and reform to this section of the labour market, the government will not help employers fill their labour and skills gaps or deliver the multigenerational workforces that studies have shown are the most productive to drive economic growth.” Dr Andrea Barry, Deputy Director for Work at the Centre for Ageing Better You can read the full report here: gov.uk/government/publicatio… #OlderWorkers #OlderEmployees #Ageing #Age #Workers

We know incredible prevention and home improvement work is happening in local authorities across the country but not every area is connected into a peer network to share and strengthen that work. The Good Home Network is for people working across housing, prevention, adaptations, adult social care and public health to exchange ideas, learn from others and drive change locally. If your area is exploring how better homes can support healthier, more independent lives, this network is for you. Join us and be part of shaping the conversation. If you’re already part of the network, please help us reach new places by sharing this post or tag a colleague in a local authority who should know about it. We are please to see that the Renter's Rights Bill has now come into force. "This landmark legislation is set to bring significant changes for renters across the country." Says our Research and Policy Manager, Nazia Azad. Notable points of this are as follows: -Strengthened protections making renting fairer, more secure and more stable. -Highlighting that poor conditions and insecure tenancies damage health and wellbeing. -This is an important step improving conditions and supporting ageing well. -The enforcement is now key to ensuring renters benefit from the new regulations. The latest findings from @Sport_England's Active Lives report published today shows good news that more older people are active than ever before and driving up activity across the country. The report finds there are 2.1 million more 55 to 74-year-olds, and 700,000 more people over the age of 75, staying active compared to 2015/16. Almost two in three (64%) of 55-74-year-olds, and more than two in five (44%) people aged 75 and over, do the recommended 150 minutes of activity a week on average. This compares to 57% of 55-74-year-olds and 33% of the 75 age group reported in the Active Lives report in 2015/16. New data from the @ONS released todayreveals the gap in life expectancy and healthy life expectancy between richest and poorest in England and Wales. There is a widening gap in how the richest and poorest experience later life, which is another reason why we need a Commissioner for Older People and Ageing in England, says our Head of Research and Analysis Dr. @AideenYoung. new update on the Keep Britain Working review was published today by @DWPgovuk, continuing the focus on tackling ill health-related inactivity and supporting more people to stay in work. Around 150 organisations have now joined the Vanguard phase, working to develop and test practical approaches to healthier working lives. This is a challenge we’ve been exploring closely. Last year, our Supporting Disabled Older Workers research brought the experiences of people in their 50s and 60s to the forefront, showing what it's really like for those trying to get into or stay in work and highlighting the changes that could make a real difference. We’re now building on this work with upcoming research exploring employer perspectives, looking at the barriers and opportunities in putting inclusive policies into practice.
