RACE PLAN → RACE ACTUAL
Part 1 - Great Escape
Km 1: 3:44 → 3:36/km
Km 2: 3:46 → 3:35/km
The front of Wave A surged, a downhill start accelerated an already outrageous pace. I knew sub 3:45/km was my red zone, It felt easy, but I knew I was on track to blow up.
Part 2 - The Music
Km 3: 3:47 → 3:45/km
Km 4: 3:47 → 3:47/km
Here I got into my pace zone, the correction was overdue. 10km is an unforgiving distance, running in the red zone comes with 1000% interest. Holding on for the remainder was going to be extremely tough.
Part 3 - Heartbreak Hill
Km 5: 3:52 → 3:59/km
Km 6: 3:52 → 3:57/km
Sharp slopes lurked at the halfway mark, over 2km 15-20m of elevation. Heroes of the 1st half hit a wall, I dropped into the grind gear and stuck it out. A 5km PB was not my goal & my pace was slipping, was I cooked?
Part 4 - Punishment
Km 7: 3:49 → 3:53/km
Km 8: 3:48 → 3:54/km
Right here I lost the most time, Cubbon Road climbs gradually until Vidhana Soudha, I struggled here to get into 3:45/km gear. A tax burden of early race heroics. To hit my sub 38min goal I needed to dig deep.
Part 5 - Ironman rescue
Km 9: 3:46 → 3:49/km
Km 10: 3:44 → 3:45/km
Triathlete base activated. The massive training weeks took over. The acid cleared and I dropped the hammer back to 3:45/km for the parade ground finish.
> REFLECTIONS
Missed my sub 38 goal by 10s and Age Group Top 10 by barely 20 seconds.
Shaving a minute and a half off my PB on this humid, rolling course proves I have it in me to break the 38 min 10km barrier before Ironman Goa!
