I spent all day in Woolwich Crown Court yesterday for the Filton activists' sentencing hearing with my colleague @daniaakkad. The court heard that the Terrorism Act was never intended to cover direct action protest. It heard that all of the defendants had been cleared of violent intent and sentencing them as terrorists would mark a historic first for charges of criminal damage. It heard that the Suffragettes, who did "a bit of smashing themselves", would have been labelled as terrorists but have now been vindicated by history. It heard the activists' goal was to stop the supply chain of drones and weaponry to Israel as it commits genocide in Gaza. It heard that attaching a terrorism connection to a case without it ever being heard by a jury was unconstitutional and posed a threat to the criminal justice system itself. It heard that the "terrorism connection" has been disproportionately used against minority groups and those advocating for them while not being used for neo-Nazis and white supremacists, including the man who killed Jo Cox MP. It heard that the law has been reinterpreted since the action took place, meaning the activists could have had no idea that what they did could have been caught up in terrorism laws at the time of the protest. It heard that the prosecution submitted key evidence just eight days before the hearing, giving the defence no time to review it or even discuss it with their clients. Despite all of this, Judge Jeremy Johnson, who has already tried to refer the defence's lead barrister for contempt of court and been forced to apologise for it, sentenced the defendants as terrorists. The judgment was handed down within minutes, indicating Judge Johnson had already made his mind up before the hearing had begun. Being in court yesterday felt akin to witnessing a colonial crime: punishing activists with terrorism offences in order to set a precedent that taking direct action to stop a UK-backed genocide will not be tolerated.

For many years, I took barbs for refusing to call Israel's policy in East Jerusalem "ethnic cleansing". After all, there were 60,000 Palestinians in East Jerusalem in 1967, and 400,000 today. Occupation sucked, and included war crimes, but it wasn't ethnic cleansing. That has changed now. There are 3 Palestinian neighborhoods, all of whose residents are being or are about to be displaced: Batan al-Hawa and al-Bustan in Silwan, and Um Haroun in Sheik Jarrah. The latter two are being razed, or will be razed in the near future. And immediately to the east, the Bedouin hamlet of Khan al-Akmar, adjacent to E-1, is about to be expelled, part of an attempt to "cleanse" Area C between East Jerusalem and the Jordan River valley of its Palestinian residents. Regrettably, I can think of no other term to use other than "ethnic cleansing".
Amnesty International has accused Israel’s government of carrying out a campaign of “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians from the occupied West Bank and annexing their territory. 🔴 LIVE updates: aje.news/ja8wy2

Amnesty International’s Agnes Callamard says the ethnic cleansing and annexation of the occupied West Bank are not the actions of a few extremist settlers, but part of a state-backed project. She’s calling on the international community to boycott Israel as violence escalates.

What a shameful decision.
🚨BREAKING: Filton 4 sentenced as terrorists Amnesty opposes the use of terrorism powers in this case. It is completely disproportionate to punish protesters for criminal damage as if they were terrorists, a sentence which stays with you for life. The defendants in today’s case were sentenced as terrorists because prosecutors want to make an example of them. Today's decision shows how direct action protesters could be treated in the future. The use of terrorism laws against direct action protesters must end. Together we must continue calling out the abuse of power and fighting for our right to protest. Israel’s campaign to displace Palestinians in the occupied West Bank is not random, and not the work of “extremist settlers.” It is state-led, state-backed, and accelerating, and amounts to crimes against humanity. Act against inhumanity, sign here: brnw.ch/21x3idD

In the avoidance of doubt as the post below is unclear: This EU Council legal opinion could be a game changer: trade with the Israeli illegal settlements can be stopped with qualified majority. On Monday, we are calling on the EU member states to BAN all trade in goods and services with Israel illegal settlements. This is what international law demands, as set out in the ICJ advisory opinion of July 2024: the EU’s clear legal obligation is to prevent trade and investments that assist in the maintenance of Israel’s unlawful occupation of the Palestinian territory, including the establishment, expansion and maintenance of illegal settlements.
This EU Council legal opinion could be a game changer: tariffs on all trade from and to the Israeli illegal settlements can be adopted with qualified majority. Will EU Governments have the courage to stand by and for international law, and by so doing, protect Palestinian communities from further forcible transfer out of the West Bank? They have an opportunity (yet again) to do the right thing on Monday.

Politico this morning: EU Council legal service confirms that the EU can curb trade with Israel's illegal settlements as a trade measure, with qualified majority. This adds further pressure on EU Commission to act, removing its excuse. Aligns with what experts have said⏭️

First image of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya from his court hearing currently taking place before the Israeli military court in occupied Jerusalem. The image shows Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya in a state of severe exhaustion and clear physical deterioration after more than a year of detention and deprivation of his freedom. Visible marks and physical changes can also be observed on his hands and arms, raising further concerns about his health condition and the circumstances of his detention, particularly in light of previous reports documenting ill-treatment and the denial of adequate medical care. What is evident in this image reinforces the growing concerns for Dr. Hussam’s health and well-being and underscores the urgent need to guarantee his fundamental rights, provide him with the necessary medical care, and secure his immediate release.

Video after video shows Israeli settlers violently harassing and attacking Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, seizing their livestock, bulldozing their schools, setting fire to their property and even killing Palestinians as part of a brutal campaign to forcibly displace Palestinians and expand control over the land – with full political and financial backing from the highest authorities of the Israeli state.   This is what a policy of state-led ethnic cleansing looks like.   Watch. Share. Demand action.   Read our full report that documents how Israel is ethnically cleansing Palestinian Bedouin and herding communities in Area C of the occupied West Bank in a bid to expand settlements, entrench apartheid and accelerate annexation: amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2… twitter.com/amnesty/status/2…
