Mysterious moments
On April 28, 1988, Aloha Airlines Flight 243 took off from Hilo bound for Honolulu with 89 passengers and 5 crew members aboard a Boeing 737. The flight seemed routine until the plane reached cruising altitude. Suddenly, at around 24,000 feet, a massive section of the fuselage roof tore away in an explosive decompression, exposing passengers to howling winds and the open sky. Chaos erupted as the cabin filled with flying debris and the deafening roar of the air. One flight attendant, Clarabelle "C.B." Lansing, was swept out of the aircraft and tragically lost. Captain Robert Schornstheimer and First Officer Madeline "Mimi" Tompkins fought to control the severely damaged plane, battling extreme turbulence and structural failure while navigating toward Maui. Through extraordinary skill and quick thinking, they managed an emergency landing at Kahului Airport. Despite the horrific damage and injuries to dozens, 94 people survived what many called a miracle. The incident led to major changes in aviation maintenance and safety standards worldwide.
