Family inherited an old WinXP-era laptop from circa 2003. Spinning hard drive, 256MB RAM, all of that. I've already heard stories about how bad modern software has become but my god it really is true. This thing literally starts up in like 10 seconds.

It was instant before, I don't know what the fuck they are doing

Oh my god they've done it again
Just want to make sure I'm reading this right: Microsoft rewrote the run dialog with performance "top-of-mind", and the best they could manage to do when putting up a single text box was 10fps?

Write better software than 99.99% of the industry with this one weird trick

I wrote it from scratch with straightforward procedural code instead of importing 10,000 libraries and gluing them together in deranged ways

Wow, had no idea Sonic the Hedgehog hated Wayland all along, who knew
Great to see a desktop environment that actively removes #Wayland dependencies. Way to go @SonicDesktop. Let's liberate our systems from all components controlled by XDG/Red Hat that have been holding back open source desktops for decades. github.com/Sonic-DE/sonic-mo…

(This is a completely and utterly pointless act, by the way, and absolutely the wrong direction imo. But I guess that's to be expected of a project that can't even update a sentence of the README?)

This *must* be deliberate at this point, right? Like I know they love their AI and their this and that but the issues are going so far through the roof atp, I'm almost starting to reach a point now where I wonder if there's some bigger reason for this

The replies here are annoying. .webp is a technically superior format in just about every single way, and it's been around for 10 years, imo basically everything should have moved now. But, 'cause a couple programs are still living in the past it's "useless" and "the devil"??
I HATE WEBP FILES I HATE THEM SO MUCH THEYRE SO USELESS OH MY GOD JUST LET ME DOWNLOAD AN IMAGE REGULARLY WITHOUT HAVING TO SEARCH "webp to png online free" IM SO SICK OF IT

But, I guess it's just the nature of it, and something to factor in when developing user-facing software. If you want confidence someone will like your thing I think you have to forget the technical "it's not my responsibility" and really try your best to make it always work

because at the end of the day, if something goes wrong with your program, even when it's not "your fault" (e.g. missing library, poor disk I/O etc.), it's always your program that gets the hit, not whatever thing on their system was *actually* to blame.
