just playing RE4 on the GameCube for the first time. it's unbelievable that people don't talk about how much Miyazaki ripped this game so far I have seen: - looping areas that continuously go back to hub save points - level design is loads of wooden broken huts and bridges connected by ladders over swamps with boulders and so on - a section where catapults fire giant fireballs at you.. in a castle.. and you have to stop between walls and run between them and kill the person operating them.... - all the levels are like swamps, lakes, castle, churches everywhere that loop back as hubs with multiple entrances - a propensity to troll the player (like "shoot this fish and a giant fish will come out and eat you") - story is backed by notes and inventory examinations - fodder enemies take many hits and attack in groups in cramped corridors - the game is heavily about limited resource management like heals and ammo, with weapon upgrades at points - the basic healing items are even coloured grass like demons souls - the enemies are all zombies, dogs, eldritch horrors and cultists - the boss battles are probably the largest departure but still, each one has a distinct arena, often environmental elements, multiple stages, weaknesses - puzzles are very similar like, climb here to throw a lever that opens up a passage on this side - item collection is very similar, there's lots of flashing blinking things everywhere you can collect, you roomba around an area finding non-obvious rooms to loot a lot of this you can say is true about any game but it's the amalgamation of everything together. it's basically dark souls except a third person shooter instead of a third person frame data melee game, and with more overt story/cutscenes. it's actually unbelievable, the more I play I'm like "surely this can't get MORE dark souls? whoops, wrong again"

can't lie, the starfox characters look creepy but I kinda enjoy that. what I do not enjoy is that UI. especially the bottom popups where the characters pop up looking like 20 something fps. very distracting to have two frame rates on screen in an action game

Streaming Ludum Dare. Came up with 50 theme ideas yesterday and they were all garbo so I'm going to make a game that's been in the mind palace for a decade and work the theme around it twitch.tv/alexrosegames

just casually scrolling twitter and saw my good friend @WhiteNoiseWave being tweeted by the mayor of london. that's awesome.
Achievement Unlocked: Europe’s number one gaming city ⭐️ Over 40m people in the UK play games and I’m proud London leads the way. Returning today, the London Games Festival is a big part of that success. The city is ready to welcome thousands of gamers.

dirrty is maybe the most underrated pop song of the era. like there must be at least 15 banger hooks in there. "if you ain't dirrty.. YOU AIN'T HERE TO PAAAAR-TYYYYY". like that song should be quoted every day. banger too

redman cooked. he couldn't come up with 1 good intro so he just strung the 20 best intros together of all time. "ring the alarm. and I'm throwing elbows". 5 different random dog barks. "LADIES. GENTLEMAN". "TOO DIRTY TO CLEAN MY ACT UP". unreal hypeman youtube.com/watch?v=4Rg3sAb8…

dunno if I ever posted my Dynamics lectures on twitter, but here's the first. useful for games. starts with the basics and goes into quaternions, buoyancy, euler integration, simple harmonic motion etc. can post the whole series if it's useful to anyone youtube.com/watch?v=ybl5cdi7…

it's unbelievable that I made a ludum dare game in 72 hours in a genre I've never made before, entire game, no bugs, everything worked, compiled first time, I literally made everything in a spreadsheet, hit go on the code and the entire game populated with full VA, visuals, and so on. came 2nd place, won 3 medals then when I do the same thing with production ready code, it's taken me about.. 50 full 18 hour days and it STILL doesn't match the spec of the jam version.... like, I do not even understand now that I know the scope of the problem.. how it was EVER possible to make this in 3 days. what the fuck was I doing?!? both of them are ultimately excel spreadsheet -> code but this one uses like a proper state machine so I can write ANY excel spreadsheet and it will work. that one was like.. it ran once for that specific set of logic and specific things were hardcoded. somehow doing it properly is like 100x more work. how is that possible. doesn't make sense. jam version still plays BETTER than like 50 days of work I was like "well because I have these extra 3-4 features in the full version let's say it takes 3x as long to write it well plus 25% on top, 12 days". HOW IS IT 50
