just playing RE4 on the GameCube for the first time. it's unbelievable that people don't talk about how much Miyazaki ripped this game
so far I have seen:
- looping areas that continuously go back to hub save points
- level design is loads of wooden broken huts and bridges connected by ladders over swamps with boulders and so on
- a section where catapults fire giant fireballs at you.. in a castle.. and you have to stop between walls and run between them and kill the person operating them....
- all the levels are like swamps, lakes, castle, churches everywhere that loop back as hubs with multiple entrances
- a propensity to troll the player (like "shoot this fish and a giant fish will come out and eat you")
- story is backed by notes and inventory examinations
- fodder enemies take many hits and attack in groups in cramped corridors
- the game is heavily about limited resource management like heals and ammo, with weapon upgrades at points
- the basic healing items are even coloured grass like demons souls
- the enemies are all zombies, dogs, eldritch horrors and cultists
- the boss battles are probably the largest departure but still, each one has a distinct arena, often environmental elements, multiple stages, weaknesses
- puzzles are very similar like, climb here to throw a lever that opens up a passage on this side
- item collection is very similar, there's lots of flashing blinking things everywhere you can collect, you roomba around an area finding non-obvious rooms to loot
a lot of this you can say is true about any game but it's the amalgamation of everything together. it's basically dark souls except a third person shooter instead of a third person frame data melee game, and with more overt story/cutscenes. it's actually unbelievable, the more I play I'm like "surely this can't get MORE dark souls? whoops, wrong again"
