Another small excess this week (3%) takes 2023 year-to-date mortality rates to the same level as in 2021. The pattern is very different though. 2021 had a severe peak followed by below average Spring mortality. 2023 had a smaller peak but followed by a consistent weekly excess.
CMI calculates 176,200 excess deaths in the UK since the start of the pandemic. That total has increased by 24,800 in the first 23 weeks of 2023.
Cumulative mortality rates YTD are 4.0% of a full year’s mortality worse than 2019. That is similar to this point in 2021. 2/3
