We went from “what good are the humanities?” to “suddenly, no one can read” in about a year, and the answer to the first question is the disinformation and lack of critical thinking you see all around you. *That* is why you need the humanities. This is what they prevent.

Hey Americanists and #twitterstorians, I was shown this item today. It's a Confederate naval jack, but unusually has the 13th star enlarged in the middle. Do any of my Civil War historian friends know what this might symbolise? It seems unusual and we're trying to get to the bottom of it. This is in Liverpool, of course.

With help from my @FiveThirtyEight colleagues, we put my county benchmarks into an interactive. The vote figures are for a 50-50 race in a given state; if one side's doing better than them with many votes counted, that's a sign they may be ahead. Enjoy! projects.fivethirtyeight.com…

as a history teacher, Eggers is one of my favorite working filmmakers because he’s one of the few artists dedicated to, in part, demonstrating how alien the past was. The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman all show a past that is deeply haunted and unknowable to us.

Apparently, some ⚪️ folk think that ⚪️ women were too maternal beneficent to own or mistreat enslaved Black people. I’m gonna try and clear up that misconception with the help of numerous sources, including the book below.

Twitterstorians, I’m teaching a graduate seminar in the spring and am building it around the practice of microhistory, with readings rooted in US history to Reconstruction. I would welcome suggestions of readings in this vein that you’ve found work well.

Before the 1900s, the labor of enslaved and free Blacks powered the maritime economy of the American South. They worked as pilots and sailors, dock workers, and shipwrights building and repairing vessels. Frederick Douglass, still enslaved, began work in a shipyard at age 12.

Indigenous People have influenced much of what we do every day - from food and fashion, to conservation, science and medicine. Indigenous Knowledge, passed down by our ancestors, will help us leave this Earth better for future generations. Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day!
