Geological evidence shows that, since the year 1200, new eruptions have occurred mostly from vents/fissures along rift zones. Prior to that, lava erupted mostly from the summit before sometimes overflowing the summit crater.
This short video shows thermal camera footage of the onset of the #MaunaLoa eruption from the volcano's summit. The temperature in degrees C is shown by the colored scale bar on the right. For additional information visit: usgs.gov/volcanoes/mauna-loa…#MaunaLoaErupts

Sometime science requires you to practice using grabby arms. Ugrad researcher @UGresearchUMKC Mya Thomas is working on a plan to put and measure ground control points for 3d visualizations in/on difficult to reach targets.
What I find amazing about this is that these oceanic volcanoes have been building up huge mountains under the water for an incredibly long time, and we get to witness the moment they reach the surface.
This can also happen multiple times as the ocean erodes away a young island.
Volcanoes are the demonstration that #Earth is a #LivingPlanet#Copernicus#Sentinel2 🇪🇺🛰️ captured, between July and October 2022, the formation of a new island in the Pacific Ocean caused by the 🌋eruption of the Home Reef volcano
