Today is #InternationalArchivesDay! To celebrate we're highlighting some of the great work done to protect and preserve the mountaineering heritage of Britain! So enjoy this thread highlighting some of our fellow organisations - thanks to @mtn_heritage for organising!

Lastly - Us! The Alpine Club collections cover much of the history of early alpine mountaineering. We hold a wide variety of material including mountain paintings, correspondence and diaries from prominent mountaineers and physical artefacts such as ice axes.

You can contact all of these organisations for details about their holdings if you've an interest in mountaineering history. The Alpine Club library is open to the public three days a week - and @mtn_heritage can be visited by appointment.

Had a fascinating tour of @mtn_heritage as part of @thealpineclub Blencathra weekend. A wonderful collection that's well worth a visit if you're researching mountaineering history.

So enjoy this tranquil painting of the Chateau de Chillon - haunted by François Bonivard, a 16thC monk who was imprisoned in the castle and inspired Byron to write a terrifying 392 line poem.
