Hannah Szenes’ poem, “Walk to Caesarea,” has encapsulated the hope of the Jewish people since it was written in 1942. After Szenes was captured and killed, the poem was set to music (opening with the words “Eli, Eli”).
It became one of Israel’s unofficial anthems, commonly played on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Watch as the Israel Philharmonic performs the meaningful song with clarinetist Sharon Kam, arranged and conducted by Alexandre Bloch.
Wrap up Hanukkah with a performance from the Toscanini Quartet (made up of Israel Philharmonic musicians) of a medley of beloved Hanukkah songs – “Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel,” “Nes Gadol,” “Maoz Tzur,” “Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah.”
The song conveys the strength of the Jewish people throughout history – a reminder that even in this difficult moment for Israel, light will overcome darkness.
Israel Philharmonic Music Director Lahav Shani recently performed with Israeli violinist Pinchas Zukerman and the @bambergsymphony in solidarity with the Jewish people and in a stand against antisemitism around the world.
After introductory statements from concert hall director Raphael von Hoensbroech and the former President of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert, the symphony played a powerful concerto by Israeli composer Paul Ben-Haim.
