No election amid genocide. Free and fair elections cannot take place while armed conflict, mass displacement, human rights violations, and restrictions on political freedoms continue. Lasting peace, justice, accountability, and the protection of all civilians must come first.

The apartheid regime of Ethiopia, led by Abiy Ahmed, should end the genocidal war in the Amhara region, release political prisoners and journalists who are detained for their identity. The international community should monitor the situation closely and ignore the sham election.

At a time when #Amhara people are facing genocidal violence, @SecBlinken's support of the Ethiopian government speaks to the US's ongoing failure to advance human rights in the international community. Where is the "shared commitment to peace" for the Amhara people? When will the US show leadership and speak to the many human rights abuses that include concentration camps, extrajudicial killings and ethnic profiling of Amharas. The mention of "prosperity" refers to Abiy's Prosperity Party and the Prosperity Gospel, not to the rights of poor vulnerable people to live stable, prosperous lives.
