The Preakness is TOMORROW! Did you know these THREE FUN FACTS about the Preakness Stakes? ✨ It’s the second race in the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, which means it’s where Triple Crown dreams either stay alive… or end. 👑 The winning horse gets covered in a blanket of black-eyed Susans, Maryland’s state flower, but the real flowers aren’t in bloom yet, so they actually use different flowers painted to match! ⏱️ It’s nicknamed “The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans” and is the shortest race of the Triple Crown series at 1-3/16 miles, making it one of the fastest and most intense moments in horse racing.

Most people think horse racing is just about speed, but the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing is about something much bigger. To win the Triple Crown, a horse must win all 3 of racing’s biggest events, at different distances, in just five weeks: 👑 The Kentucky Derby on May 2nd at 1-1/4 miles. 👑 The Preakness Stakes on May 16th at 1-3/16 miles. 👑 The Belmont Stakes on June 6 at 1-1/2 miles. This is why winning the Triple Crown is one of the rarest achievements in sports. It takes speed, endurance, consistency, and the ability to handle pressure at the highest level. Do you know how many horses in history have achieved this crowning glory?! Comment your guess below!

Meet our next mentee, Marissa Perry! Marissa joined the Amplify Horse Racing Mentorship Program to build meaningful connections and gain hands-on knowledge in the Thoroughbred industry. With interests in breeding, marketing, and training, she’s excited to expand her understanding of the many opportunities within horse racing. Coming from a background rooted in 4-H meetings, competitions, and open horse shows, Marissa is no stranger to the equine world. She is currently a member of her local boarding facility’s IEA dressage team and is also participating in an online horse-judging camp to broaden her knowledge across multiple disciplines. With career goals centered around breeding and overall training in the equine industry, Marissa looks forward to growing her experience and making the most of the opportunities ahead through the Amplify program.

For the past year, Team Amplify has been hard at work developing a new high school curriculum that we are VERY excited to share with the world later this summer. As part of the initial research and pilot project phase, we partnered with @BSHSacademies to pilot the curriculum in their class the week before the Kentucky Derby. As a special final capstone, we brought a horse to their school! And this wasn’t just any horse... it was multiple graded stakes winner United, who now has a second career as an eventer (and now a school ambassador!). A very special thank you to @madisonscott157 and @LNJFoxwoods for sharing your special boy with us, @salleehorsevans for providing United’s transportation, and all of our volunteers who made this event possible.

What does it take to raise a Kentucky Derby winner, and what does it feel like when you get to watch them cross the wire? Alicia Bruder walks us through what it was like to raise him @claibornefarm as a foal to then watching him win the Kentucky Derby last weekend! 📷: @SaraChristineG

We're ready to keep it rolling by introducing another one of our outstanding mentees for this session! Today, we want you to meet Lauren Bloss. Lauren is originally from El Paso, TX, and earned her degree in Animal Science with a concentration in Equine Production from Texas Tech University. She recently relocated to Louisville, KY, where she is pursuing a certificate in Equine Administration at the University of Louisville’s College of Business. Her passion for the horse racing industry began with her grandmother, a longtime Thoroughbred breeder, and she is excited to expand her knowledge through Amplify’s Mentorship Program as she works toward continuing that legacy in the equine industry.

It's Derby Day!
How do horses qualify for the Kentucky Derby? It’s based on a points system. Horses compete in a series of prep races called the “Road to the Kentucky Derby,” running from September through April. Each race awards points, and the biggest races at the end can offer up to 100 points to the winner(s). At the end of the series, the top 18–20 point earners earn a spot in the starting gate, and a chance to make history as a Kentucky Derby winner. Who is your Derby pick this year? 📷: @KurtisCoady
