Farmer and organizer for rural women, Mariama is the national coordinator of Nous sommes la solution (We are the solution) in Senegal, a rural women’s movement for food sovereignty, spreading across Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, Ghana and Guinea.
Through
#agroecology practices, Mariama and her movement work with rural
#women to take charge of their livelihoods and create an empowering support network for each other.
Mariama passionately explains why
#African governments should protect Farmer Managed Seed Systems (
#FMSS) and farmers' variety seeds against any appropriation attempts by industrial agriculture property rights regimes:
"Governments across Africa must safeguard Farmer Managed Seed Systems and farmers' variety seeds from the clutches of industrial agriculture's property rights regimes. These regimes aim to patent our seeds, rendering us dependent on their products and stripping us of our diversity—the very source of our resilience and ability to thrive as a people. It is essential that we defend these systems to maintain our independence and ensure our communities are not exposed to multiple crises."
