The persona comes first. The position comes after. You were the Loan. open.substack.com/pub/expect…

Modern investing increasingly resembles consumption. Part value. Part experience. Part dopamine.

Giving an enterprise valuation on SpaceX from a small-float IPO is like extrapolating beer prices at an NHL game. The price you pay is real. The price beer is worth is something else entirely.

The essay I just published opens with Rory Sutherland. That opening did not exist 36 hours ago. I added it because I had no audience in mind, and the essay was too technical. Then I asked myself who I would actually want to share it with. I’ve read @rorysutherland’s Alchemy many times. Simply imagining him as a reader changed how the essay opened. The frame came first. The opening came after. Funny thing: the essay is about exactly this mechanism.

I want someone to fund my idea of a Davos-style event where every speaker has recently retired. You would then immediately hear the unvarnished truth about absolutely everything.

Priessnitz at Gräfenberg, 1822, ran the full template. Cold water, sun exposure, fresh air, walks, plain food, rest. Rollier later specialized the heliotherapy piece for TB. Same template, eighty years earlier. Wrote an essay tracing the arc from Gräfenberg to Battle Creek to the wellness industry of today. open.substack.com/pub/expect…

All true. Missing connection is the John Harvey Kellogg link that completed the circuit from Europe to the United States and then back. Fascinating short read: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…

The wellness industry is now worth almost seven trillion dollars. Larger than sports and pharma combined. The best intentions have a strange habit of becoming a business plan.

Is my Bachelor of Commerce degree now useless? I asked myself that question in my latest essay. Back in my undergrad years in the early 1990s, financial theories described a world we don't actually live in. Black-Scholes, CAPM, portfolio allocation.

Lately, professors have been panicking about AI and students cheating. The cheating panic is the wrong panic. AI didn't break credentials. It exposed what credentials were already measuring.

My latest essay. Spoiler alert: my Bachelor of Commerce degree not useless. substacktools.com/sharex/ypS…

The AI cheating panic misses the point. If you're willing to pay $40K a year to outsource your university trajectory, the scandal isn't that you got away with it. It's that you bought something worthless, wasted the time, and left everything on the table. The diploma will be printed, but the neurons misfired.

The AI cheating problem and the AI hallucination problem are the same problem. Both produce plausibility and get mistaken for truth. Students do it on purpose. Models do it by design. Institutions are stalled, because they no longer know what or how to measure.

A hallucination only exists if it is caught. Otherwise, it passes off as knowledge.
