Retired after 40 yrs in education. Still interested; still involved. Formerly, Regional Director, West Midlands (DfE) & HT. FCCT. Passionate about learning.
“There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected ... “ (Kofi Annan). A great thought for today.
After 40yrs in education, today marks the 1st day of “retirement”. Given my love/less-love relationship with West Coast Main Line trains, it feels serendipitous to be starting this new chapter far away from trains. 3 month break and then I’ll be taking up 2 trust chair roles.
Many, many thanks for all the kind comments on my being awarded a CBE. Tonight I’ll raise a glass to the amazing pupils, colleagues and leaders I’ve worked with, learnt from, and been privileged to represent over a career of almost 40 years. A happy new year to you all.
Although Twitter is often a place of nasty polarisation, I hope we can all agree that Christmas cake is best served with Wensleydale cheese. #MrsBYorkshireOrigins
Thank you and thank you for the opportunities to work together over the years. But for now, wishing you and all your members a very happy Christmas and a successful 2025.
Last call; last email read and answered; kit all handed in. It has been a wonderful privilege to serve in @educationgovuk and alongside my @RGWestMidlands colleagues. What a great team to be a part of! Time is now up, the next adventure awaits. Over and out!

It’s been a fortnight of “lasts” as I made my last trip to @educationgovuk in Westminster yesterday to meet and say goodbye to my wonderful Regions Group Directors. One of the most remarkable teams I’ve ever been privileged to be part of. Thank you!
A very frosty start at Crewe station this morning as I head down to Coventry for the penultimate Advisory Board of 2024. Grateful for all train staff this morning particularly those who’ve had to work on unfreezing points!
A panel of #MAT leaders discusses trust expansion at ##SAASHOW- and hears from a @educationgovuk regional director that trusts will have an important role to play in ensuring children thrive.
Heading south again across snowy fields to the @SAA_Show. Looking forward to sharing in a couple of the sessions as well as catching up with other speakers and school leaders. Safe travels!
It’s a cold, dark and snowy start this morning at Crewe. Train is on time, warm and I’ve even got a desk and sockets! Thank you Avanti! #It’sTheLittleThings
It’s a seasonal challenge: when is it ok to eat the first mince pie (I know it doesn’t compare to global warming and world peace!), I’ve been on the road a lot this week so a quality, warm mince pie could not be resisted. Ticked that one off the list!
Just the way this platform has gone of late makes me post less often. But I suppose an occasional dog post is needed more than ever to counter everything else on here.
A spare 15 minutes and a chance to munch a sandwich in Sheffield’s very special Peace Gardens. Particularly pleasant due to the fact that rain is on my usual side of the Pennines! #LovingSheffield
