Structure for Change
You have a vision for a new future. You can’t wait to get started. Upon fruition, it will make all the difference. But first, design a structure for change.
I’m engaged in a handful of strategic planning exercises at the moment initiated to create a new and more promising future for the organizations involved. Put more simply, these organizations want to design change. What I’m learning from these endeavors is that designing change is really about designing a structure for change. Change is hard because everyone wants it and no one will do it.
So how do you break that inertia to move forward?
With a structural framework that acts as scaffolding for a vision of the destination. The framework must be solid and strong and resolute. Solidity comes from knowing what will hold up the vision (clearly define vision, mission, goals, strategy.) Strength comes from ownership of all parties who must defend it (be inclusive in its design so key players buy into it.) And resolution means commitment to outcome, even when it’s hard (provide the team with enablers along the way to facilitate compliance).
Takeaway: Structure supports change. Start with a definition of vision, mission, goals, strategy.
