An update on the two putative Flounced Chestnut this week. Many hours of research later, CMR is happy both are Southern Chestnut. A new species for VC12 but almost guaranteed to be hiding in plain site on heathland elsewhere. A difficult group to say the least, needs work!
Having thought the switch to Westerlies would be a problem later in the night quite the opposite! Potential migrants Gem nfg, Radfords FS nfg, P vitrealis, 2 x Silver Y, xylostella & RD Pearl. Another Flounced Chestnut, Shoulder-striped Wainscot(!) & H glaucinalis. 47 of 21.
Much better night despite the wind. Potential moth of the night for here a putative Flounced Chestnut. First Chestnuts of Autumn, 3 Merveille DJ 4 Black Rustic etc. Potential migrants Clifden NP, Scarce-bordered Straw nfy, HM Hawk-moth, xylostella. 37 of 17.
Slightly fewer visitors Monday night, three nfy more than gratefully received though. Merveille de jour, Beaded Chestnut & Clancy’s Rustic. Female Four-spotted Footman, P vitrealis & a very late Lesser Swallow Prom’ continue the recent theme of late records. Still no Sallow!
Very respectable in the end last night, no additional nfy so Large Ranunculus x 2, Black Rustic x 4 & Delicate taking garden total to 472 for the year. Moths scattered everywhere so maybe more to come. 81 of 27, potential migrants Silver Y, Delicate & Angle Shades.
Haven’t trapped since Saturday night but I’ve a habit of checking the trap wall anyway. Nfy Large Ranunculus, no idea if he’s been hanging around hidden somewhere but I’ll take it! 😀
Anyone else seeing a westerly movement of Wood Pigeon in the last week or so? Usual light passage of Mipits, odd Grey & Yellow Wag heading S.
I’ll try a count in the morning but no reciprocal movement later in the day. Odd Stock Dove & two small doves (no bins 😖) mixed in.
Numbers improved with cloud cover & better temps, although a couple of after dark showers seemed to slow arrivals. Ypsolopha alpella was nfg, a late A tringipennella was a welcome first for ‘24, Lunar Underwing nfy ,Carnation Tortrix & P vitrealis the best of the rest. 84 of 30sp
According to the weather apps down to 7C, more like 5C! Big surprise finding a Small Mottled Willow nfg, thought that chance had gone for the moment. 19 of 13 species, Centre barred Sallow seem to be having a good year. VC12 E Hants.
Following a very late Leopard Moth last night and assuming it’s the last for ‘24, I thought I’d dig deeper into the detail. Recorded on 7 nights between 25/6 & 3/9, total of 39 with the highest count of 17 on 25/6. This compares with VC12 total individuals of 39, 30, 37 2020-22.
Didn’t expect too much, but Oak Lutestring nfg & an early Autumnal Rustic nfy on a chillier night made it more than worthwhile. A cryptic Old Lady on the path which I managed to avoid, Small Wainscot, another Cedestis subfasciella, Leopard Moth & P vitrealis made for a good trap.
Back to reality following a drizzly day and heavy shower just before dawn. A shame as otherwise it looked very good again. Just this micro which may end up with camera, phone & moth being launched out of the window! Looks ok for Agonopterix nervosa to me, any comments welcome!
217 of 71 was my busiest September trap yet. Plenty of local quality, Cryptoblabes bistraga & Cedestis subfasciella nfg, Old Lady & two C b Sallow nfy. Other notables included LC Underwing, Cloaked Carpet, Horse Chestnut, A latistria & Jersey Tiger (still unusual here).
Another pleasant trap, although the strength of the wind probably restricted total numbers. Pyrausta purpuralis was nfy, only the third here. Others fresh in were Oak Hook-tip, E limbata & another Hedge Rustic. Grey Pine Carpet now up to 12. 106 of 40. VC12.
The first of what I would consider an autumn species in the form of a slightly tired Hedge Rustic nfy last night. I usually see several so hopefully fresher individuals to follow. Otherwise very little bar another Palpita vitrealis & Chinese Character worthy of mention. VC12.
132 of 50 to two traps, a little more in the MV this morning. Just the one nfy, Eupoecilia angustana, second garden record, with a few more second broods appearing, Burnished Brass, Spruce Carpet, Small Dusty Wave etc.
