For years, the animal welfare agency inspecting Scottish salmon farms refused to share what it found - claiming releasing inspection reports would “likely result in significant detriment to the companies, negatively impacting their ability to conduct business" and "manage their reputation".
That excuse has just been thrown out.
Government watchdog, the Information Commissioner's Office, has ruled that the Animal and Plant Health Agency had no valid grounds to withhold its inspection reports from the public.
The reports that we have seen so far reveal:
🐟 100,000 fish were suffocated, and another one million were poisoned. No enforcement action taken.
🐟 600,000 fish dead at another farm from hydrogen sulphide; the same problem occurred months later, killing 1.5 million more animals. No enforcement action taken.
🐟 A farm saw over 200,000 mortalities but never reported a single death. There is no record of APHA ever visiting the site.
This is an industry out of control, and the regulators are failing to hold it accountable.
