My article, "Journey or Destination? Rethinking Pilgrimage in the Western Tradition" is now online (Open Access). Delighted it has been chosen for the front cover of the @Religions_MDPI Special Issue, "Pilgrimage and Religious Mobilization in the World"! mdpi.com/2077-1444/14/9/1157

Our Lady of Rocamadour is famous for interceding on behalf of sailors and captives, hence the ship theme and shackles in the chapel!
And here she is: the 12th-century miracle-working statue of Our Lady of Rocamadour! 😍

Thrilled to visit Rocamadour (France) yesterday! 😍 Founded in response to the discovery of the relics of a hermit, St Amadour. However, it became a famous pilgrimage destination in the 12th century when numerous miracles were attributed to a statue of Our Lady of Rocamadour.

Following in the footsteps of medieval pilgrims, up the 216 steps of the 'Grand Staircase' to the Sanctuary above. πŸ‘£ Pious pilgrims may climb on their knees or say an Ave Maria at each step. (Tourists far outnumber pilgrims today!)

A pilgrim destination that's been on my wish-list after being introduced to it for my MA many years ago! Where am I?

Driving along the Dordogne valley on a pilgrimage mission! En route we stoped at Sarlat. Market stalls set up around St Sacerdos Cathedral.

St James Church proved too small to continue as Bergerac's parish church so Notre Dame was built in the neo-gothic style in the 19th century.
St James Church, Bergerac. πŸ‡«πŸ‡· A chapel dedicated to St James documented here in late 11th century and by the 12th visited by pilgrims on their way to Santiago. The medieval church was mostly destroyed during the Wars of Religion and the current church dates from late 17th & early 18th centuries. Note the reredos depicting St James as protector of pilgrims. πŸ˜‡πŸ‘£

50 years ago I spent a year in Santiago πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ as a student - it turned out to be the most consequential year in πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ since the Civil War. I never saw a single tourist; the Camino wasn't A Thing. I'm thinking things may have changed a little - arriving soon on the Camino Primitivo.

Pilgrims begin their Camino at the Eglise Notre-Dame de Bergerac, cross the Dordogne where medieval pilgrims would have crossed on an earlier 12th-century bridge (sadly swept away in a flood), perhaps after first taking on sustenance at the Saint James Bistro! πŸ‘£
Bonjour from the medieval heart of Bergerac on the Dordogne and at the start of one of France's caminos. Our apartment (2nd image) is in a 15th- century half- timbered building. Perfect!
