The resident and fellow physicians at @PennMedicine are unionizing!!
UPenn housestaff would the first residents in Pennsylvania to unionize. We are determined to not only improve patient care at UPenn, but to set standards for what residency and equity in healthcare should be.
😔 Hospital visitor restrictions reduced caregivers' contact with the medical team, causing caregivers & patients emotional distress. Facilitating communication may benefit caregivers who cannot be present.

🙈 The impacts of visitation restrictions can be invisible. This editorial discusses the barriers some families experience to being at the bedside & a call to action to reform the inpatient healthcare delivery model & family-centeredness.

I invite my fellow researchers to reflect a bit on why they might consider someone with a lived experience of a health condition researching it more biased than someone without.
A short 🧵

Time again to revisit hospital "visitation" (family presence) policies. @washingtonpost@angelahaupt recently ran a piece providing tips for how to manage as a family member when you're not allowed in washingtonpost.com/wellness/… Clinicians and health system leaders should do more 🧵
Thank you, @releiter, for yet another incredibly thoughtful and important piece: "when we set societal expectations for a good death, we claim a command over nature that we don’t always have."
“Rather than being concerned hope is so fragile it can be lost or so powerful it can overwhelm, remember hope is protective, if not necessary, for managing serious illness.”
So grateful to write with @SchenkerYael @rabob!

Thank you, @JHartMD, for this important piece advocating for a return to patient- and family-centered care: "Family Presence for Critically Ill Patients During a Pandemic" journal.chestnet.org/article…
"Health care systems can now leverage
knowledge and evidence gained over the first year of the
pandemic to promote the safe return of families to the
bedside, which will promote the well-being of patients,
families, and physicians."
