A Monster's Expedition (2020) Absolutely phenomenal puzzle game. Similar to Leap Year, it keeps a good pace introducing new mechanics that lead you to reevaluate previous areas. It just keeps getting better the more you play it; a trend that continues well into the post-game.

Parking Garage Rally Circuit (2024) Perfect bite-sized series of time trials. Oddly reminiscent of Hyper Demon with its central leaderboard and playerbase seemingly uninterested in climbing it. If you wanted more from Mario Kart's drifting, this is the game for you.

Been playing Parking Garage Rally. I'm not even that big on racing games, but this one just clicked with me. Will definitely be playing more.

Started playing La-Mulana. Im only three hours in, but it's absolutely incredible so far. It has the same sort of secret hunting that I love from Metroid, except instead of your reward being a few extra missiles, you get the spear that pierced Jesus.

Tiling Forest (DEMO) Really nice logic game that makes full use of its open world structure. Each puzzle has levels to how "solved" they are, forcing you to return as new pieces are unlocked. Half the fun is determining which areas are even doable with your current abilities.

This trend is great. I'm just gonna keep posting random lists and let you guys figure out the category. Surely I'm the first to come up with such a novel concept.
Here's my attempt at this trend. I really considered adding Sekiro, but it's just too simple even if it is the best at what it does. Haven't played NGB, NG2, GOW2/3, or Nioh 2, but I'm sure they'd make the list.

Just off the top of my head, unordered, and only includes the usual kinds of games with extra complexity that come up in these convos - so no classic Doom, shmups, etc. I could see a lot of games making this list in the future, like FF7R, Monster Hunter GU, Magenta Horizon, etc

Realizing most of the mechanics are loosely inspired by actual scientific concepts, and I got spoiled by watching Vsauce 10 years ago.

Outer Wilds (2019) Not as life-changing as I was led to believe, but definitely enjoyable. I'm most impressed by the seamless marriage of mechanics and narrative that lets you understand the story through your own experience, and vice versa. Hoping the DLC is less overt though.

I wish more rhythm games had a weird gimmick like this. Game is Super Crazy Rhythm Castle.

Going for PFCs in Spin Rhythm has me reconsidering my stance on sharpness vs smoothness. It's true that familiarity begets smoothness, but the precision required to hit every single note perfectly goes beyond that. Suddenly it's not just about reading, but maintaining perfection.

Perhaps this too will smoothen with experience, but I'm having a hard time keeping focus even on lower difficulties. Maybe rhythm games do trend toward sharpness at the highest level, or maybe it can be smooth with practice. Either way the skill issue was with me all along lmao.
