🚨 New paper out with Chris Alcantara (@westernuPoliSci) and @cynthiachuo in Publius: The Journal of Federalism: academic.oup.com/publius/adv… We use different machine-learning techniques to measure policy diffusion regarding cannabis legislations in Canada. Check it out!
Now in @apsrjournal: in a study of >800 politicians in four countries led by @jbpilet, we find that politicians massively overestimate how conservative citizens are, on a long list of policy issues. /1

2/ David Smith was a remarkable man of letters gifted with a synthetic intellect able to draw diverse threads together to fashion cohesive accounts of major political phenomena.
3/ He was also one of the most congenial colleagues one could hope to encounter in the academy and spend time with socially. A rare thing, I saw him successfully incorporate the insights of a major novelist—Henry Miller—into a professional political science presentation.
4/ Whether directed at political parties, parliaments, constitutions or provincial political culture, his thoughtful gaze deeply enriched our understanding of Canadian politics. Political science is the poorer for his passing.
1/ From everyone @UCalgaryPolisci, our sincere condolences to Dr. David Smith.
Our colleague, Dr @AnthonyMSayers, kindly provided the following reflections on what Dr. Smith's contributions to the study of Canadian Politics for us here.
