To be slightly fair, you can't really get away from the act of choosing, and 3 is a good number because 2 is too little, 5 is too much, and ya gotta include that one relic/joker/item/trinket that increases it to 4.
i don't want to shit on indie devs, making a game is hard, but why do like half the indie games presented today have this pick-1-of-3 roguelite-lite mechanic?
surely there are more ways to create replay value?
