The most common mistake a defender makes when defending a wall pass is look at the ball.
In this situation the defender needs to use his body and arm to block and hold them off before the wall pass can be completed.
Work on individual player development through game concepts and situations that make them think, decide, and execute.
If your drill doesn't check all 3, either you're focusing it in another direction, or something's missing.
Dribbling forward gives defenders time to compact.
If they're organized, playing an interior pass becomes very difficult, and forces you into risky situations. Positional Play demands dynamism and advantages through space and time.
Real Story
A coach reached out: his 7-year-old kids wouldn't pass to each other. He didn't know what to do.
Our advice? Add constraints that reward teamwork to reach the drill's goal. Don't force it, reward it.
What constraints would you recommend him? π
Coaching Education goes beyond simply offering resources.
It also includes listening, reflecting, and being willing to evaluate yourself.
We like to say that in football, we're all lifelong students.
Holding the ball to draw defenders is a very good concept, but the player must apply other concepts to read where the pressure is coming from, identify who the free player is, and figure out which teammate can help them find that free player through a third-man combination.

One of the questions club directors often ask themselves is: How can I identify and discover talent?
Albert Puig, who was in charge of La Masia when Lamine Yamal was signed, gives you a few insights:

A common mistake in build-up play is allowing a defender to sit in an intermediate zone where their positioning lets them cover more than one player at a time.
The distance between attackers needs to be large enough to force that defender to commit, or leave them beaten.
Why do we keep passing between players who are so close to each other? β½οΈπ
In Positional Play, we do it to draw defenders in and free up other teammates. After playing those short combinations, we need to look away and exploit the space and time we've created for thirds.
Against high-pressure situations, an emergency lane in the weak side is one way to escape that pressure.
This pass breaks the structure, the pressing traps, and prevents the defending team from continuing to press, forcing them to drop back and reorganize.
After a year of implementing the APFC methodology, the club's technical director is clear: it's making an impact.

A key coaching point for our players: when they don't have the ball, they need to recognize who their defender is and get as far away from them as possible.
Cues and references will be where the ball is and the space they have.
Development never stops & all players deserve better coaches everywhere.
We're proud to partner with NorCal Premier to bring world-renowned coach educator Albert Puig to Northern California. Former FC Barcelona Academy Director oversaw development of many current stars.

Universal Offensive Concept | Play What You See
Play what you see isn't just about not losing the ball. It's about clustering players together with simple passes, dragging defenders out of shape, and creating space elsewhere to attack the goal.
Attacking a low block? The pass will be the first phase habit yo should work on.
Ball speed disrupts their shape. The moment you dribble into a crowded space, you hand the advantage back to the defense.
