"Trump’s policy platform was mass deportation, tariffs, and putting himself above the law. Otherwise, he just said he’d make everything better and didn’t explain how, or proposed things that experts said would make things worse. Didn’t matter"

"I think this will go very bad, and the near future will likely be darker than anything most living Americans have ever experienced. I hope I’m wrong, more than I’ve ever hoped to be wrong in my life. I really don’t think I am."

I was wrong about America, but I don't regret believing while I still could.
With Trump's biggest-ever margin of victory, there was no One Weird Trick that would've swung the race.
He went mask-off and America chose it.
My post-election take in @ArcDigi:

31. I think the United States is in perfect position to live up to another Churchill quip: “You can always count on the Americans to do the right thing, after they have exhausted all the other possibilities.”
32. That’s why I think this is going to work...

This piece is more than a prediction. It’s a clarion commitment to The Great Experiment and a declaration in the belief that enough of us still want to “keep it”.
Screw it, I'm all-in.
I've never done an election prediction like this before, but...
Kamala Harris is going win.
Plus 43 other things I think as we head into this historical election.

Very much agree with this point from @ngrossman81: Dems needed to run hard against Trump being an insurrectionist and a criminal, and whatever happens in the end, it's hard to see how any of that helped him, despite savvy punditry to contrary

"It’s rare to see a trio in greater need of a giant L than Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Elon Musk, and rarer still that all three can get one at the same time."

Trump and Co. will try to steal the election if they don't win, that much is obvious. They've learned from their failed 2020 coup attempt, preparing to do better this time.
But many are missing that democracy's defenders learned too.

"Trump losing, lying about election results, and trying to overthrow democracy with the backing of the institutional GOP is the positive scenario. That would sound shockingly bad to an American in 2015, but in 2024 it’s much better than the alternative."
msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opin…
"I do not think most Americans are foolish, wicked, or fond of cruelty. But many of our institutions, communities, and citizens have been warped by Trump’s sustained assault on liberal democratic principles, his revulsion of the open society."

Voters rejecting Trump's authoritarism will preserve US democracy for now, but the societal and institutional changes of the last decade are deep. Even with a Harris win, restoring American democracy will take time and effort, @aselrod argues in @ArcDigiarcdigital.media/p/wake-us-u…
"Now the entire law-and-order Republican party, senior officeholders on down, is engaged in a national project to put this one criminal above the law." All the ways in which Trump has inverted the normal rules of politics from @NGrossman81:

It's as if the normal rules of politics have been turned upside-down. The 2024 election will show whether they really have been—and whether Trump’s fluke victory in 2016 really was a watershed. New from @NGrossman81:
thebulwark.com/p/the-upside-…
Unofficial Rules of US Politics
1) Crime doesn't pay
2) Economic records matter
3) If racist, use dogwhistles
4) Hold candidates to promises
5) Support democracy and US allies
2024 is deciding if those and more are upended
