TLDR: I’m autistic. I’m going to wear earplugs sometimes because I’m sensitive to sound. I often express emotions differently, and they are often delayed. I have trouble seeing emotions in faces. I’m going to explore unmasking my autistic behaviors. A thread:

Thoughts and feelings are not truth. What you believe has more to do with how long you’ve been exposed to it instead of if it truth or based on reality. 🧵

Thoughts like, “I’m not good enough” and “I’m not worthy of love” feel like truth because you have told yourself that for so long. Take some time everyday to challenge those thoughts. Imagine you’re your own defense attorney and present evidence proving they are not true. 🧵

You won’t begin to believe in yourself immediately, but just keep exposing your brain to these positive thoughts and overtime you can rewire your brain. It’s just like lifting weights, you won’t see results immediately, but you’re still making progress. #wellness

Here’s a lesson my great great grandmother taught me. When I was four years old my great great grandmother would make me laugh by flexing her arm— showing off a ping pong ball of a bicep and an acre of sagging skin underneath it. 🧵

She let me push her mechanical vacuum around her house, and do other little chores for her. This was a big deal for me because I was a sick, little kid that often felt weak and useless. She taught me that being weak, or having moments of weakness isn’t such a bad thing. 🧵

The great thing about being weak is that you have the opportunity to make others feel strong. #MentalHealthMatters #MentalHealthAwareness #anxiety #depression

Before my autism diagnosis I thought I just got sick a lot. Autistic overloads can cause my body temperature to rise so I always thought the shaking, fatigue, etc was just because I was sick with fever. 🧵 #Autism #Neurodivergent #autistic #autismawareness

I would rest for a few days and feel better, just like you do when fighting an infection so I never questioned it. There’s also been anecdotal evidence that some autistic behaviors lesson during fevers. 🧵

I wonder if the fever (or other immune response accompanied by the fever) during/after an overload is the body’s way of regulation. It senses things are getting out of control so it uses a fever to calm things down. news.mit.edu/2024/understand…

Autistic shutdowns are such a surreal experience. I made a video about how speech can be affected, but there are many other skills that can diminish/ shut off. For me it’s anything in this chart. Today it was motor skills/coordination and I couldn’t walk without help.🧵1/3

Having the knowledge of what it is makes it less scary and I can’t help but laugh about how silly I must look with my wobbly legs. The skills usually comeback within a couple of hours, but may be diminished for days. 🧵2/3
