So if summertime sadness ever hits you, you're not alone in that—and if you're a parent watching your teen pull away this summer, that feeling of not knowing how to help is real too.
Teen Lifeline is open every day for teens and anyone worried about a teen this summer. #602Day
ALT Texter 1: Summer has been kind of hard, and I’m feeling alone. Who can I talk to for help?
Texter 2: Teen Lifeline’s hotline is here for exactly that—for teens to talk with teen peer counselors any day. They get what you’re feeling because they live it too. Call or text 602-248-8336 (or if you’re in Southern AZ, you can call 520-327-8336).
Texter 1: Thanks! I think I’ll call now.

Some conversations are hard to start—not because you don't know what you feel, but because you don't know where to begin.
The communication wheel is one tool we use in counseling to give teens (and adults) a structure for difficult conversations.
#MentalHealthMonth
ALT Communication Wheel. Step 1: Describe the situation. 2: “I think…” 3: “I feel…” 4: “I need…” 5: “I want from you…” 6: “I’m willing to do…”
How to use the communication wheel:
1. Step away and pause so you can talk calmly.
2. Ask if now's a good time to talk, or when would be.
3. Share your POV, then listen when it's their turn.
Situation: Name what's happening specifically. Example: "Social stuff has been hard lately."
I think: Tell them your take on the situation. Example: "I think I need to set some limits."
I feel: Name the emotions this brings up. Example: "I feel exhausted and overwhelmed."
I need: Describe things you think would help. Example: "I need it to be okay if I have to cancel."
I want: Tell them what you're hoping they'll do. Example: "Understand I'm not being distant."
I’m willing: Share what you can do about this. Example: "I can do shorter hangouts."
